Poll: What Should Make My Test-Drive Short List?
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:50:19 pm »
As mentioned in the other thread:

Given my current lifestyle of hiking, biking, camping, and God knows what else this coming year, and after having struggled with a number of issues that arise when you try to do all this with a compact car, I have decided to give up Miss Jetta and go big(ger) or go home.

Current facts
1. Good ground clearance is a must.  We spend almost every weekend on country roads out in bumfack nowhere, and will continue to do so.  Remember my oil pan accident?
2.  Since I've got the GPS, most carpool with me now.  This usually means 3-4 hikers in my vehicle at a time, plus our 25L (or bigger) backpacks.
3.  For cycling, I want to easily stash my mountain bike in the back of the vehicle, with a possible hitch option when there are more than two of us traveling together.

Must Haves
1.  Pre-owned only.
2.  The budget is ~$18-$20K at list (before negociations begin)
3.  Mileage 60-80K kms
4.  Interior functionality more important than esthetics
5.  Nothing older than 2008 (unless there's a compelling reason)
6.  Relatively decent on gas.  Miss Jetta runs at 10L-ish/100km.  I drive about 15,000 kms per year, so not a huge concern.
7.  Reasonably reliable – I drive my cars until they start costing me stupid amounts of money to fix.
8.  Automatic only.  The knee is done with clutching.  I'm sorry, already – now stop whining.
9.  Loads of cargo room for activities as indicated above.

Nice to Have
1.   4WD or AWD on demand.  Full time may make it a gas pig.
2.   V6 - max.
3.   Roof rails
4.   Heated seats
5.   Any colour but silver or beige, but ultimately doesn't matter.

So, let's try this again.  No mini-vans, pickups, wagons or Jeeps.  What would you test drive?

How about "All of the Above"?  And take your bike to the dealer.

The engine in the RAV4 (V6) is pretty impressive.  Loads of fun.

Might check on a used Lexus RX/Acura MDX...and I'd strongly consider an Acura RDX.

The V-6 in the RAV is pretty sweet.  A ton of power and fuel economy comparable to many fours.
No place I'd rather be...

Fixed.  Forgot to include it, as it did make the original short list.  :)

The Santa Fe and RAV 4 would top my list.  Very impressed with both. Both are long in the tooth for the current generations and are well sorted out as a consequence. The Hyundai would give you a bit more spacious cabin and should cost less (or get you more features / less miles for your dollar).  The V6 in the RAV is all that and a bag of chips, but it's a stretch to call it "fun", IMO.  Had one for a week in Florida and it really impressed by being an effortless cruiser regardless of load.  V6 would be the only way to go with the Santa Fe as well.

I picked the Rav4, but a Ridgeline would be perfect too. ;D

I changed my vote for the Santa Fe since neither the Element or Endeavor I suggested made the list... :'(

We looked at one before we got the MPV in 2007 but my 4' 10" wife couldn't see out past the C pillar.  She had an Excel plus the family had a Sonata, two Accents and a Pony....happy with all of them.

+1 for Santa's Fe. I suppose a 3 y.o. one can be found for a lot less than a RAV. And with passengers + cargo cross anything 4 cyl off the list. It would get you from A to B of course, but trust me, you'll like a V6 a lot more.

If she got by with a Jetta for the last few years...I'm pretty sure an RDX would do just fine.

So.  We've got RAV4 (V6, it seems, but still a WTF to me), Forester, Santa Fe and Escape currently in the test drive running.  I'm digging that.  Mitsu and Kia will get their due as well, from my end.

Yes, Weexy - it's a long way off.  I'm looking forward to coming back here and reading what I was considering at this moment in time, compared to what I will end up buying at that moment in time.  I think it's awesome to torture everyone for the greater good.   :rofl2:

You don't need the V6.   2.5 - 4 banger is fine.  MY 2009 best.

But I've still got my $$$ on an Escape from used car hell>:D
