I don't think there is much difference in the quality of cars these days. Case in point: I drive a 2008 Pontiac Wave that has a bad reputation. The fact is that the few problems I had when the car was new were all covered by warranty. Now it is running well. I think the Camry is a nice car, but no match to the 7 liter Ford I had in 1974!
a 1974 for with a 7 liter engine??...man, did that thing have a firehose going from the fuel tank to the carbs?
A woman I worked with in '78 had a Ford Gran Torino with a 460 cu inch engine.  Toronto to Mt Tremblant and back she said it did about 10.5 mpg.

It looked like this but white.

The sad thing is that in the bad old 70's "emissions" era , it took big cubes to retain similar power to the pre-1971 cars with smaller displacement.
"Let me help." A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over "I love you."

There was no 1974 Ford with a seven litre engine.

There was a 7.5L in '74, and a 7 litre (429 cid) in '73, cuz my late and dear old dad had one. He firmly believed that there was "no substitute for cubic inches", and discussing any of those other numbers with him; like weight, torque, and horsepower, was pretty much futile.

1974-76 T-Bird had 7.5L (460) engines.  The Gran Torino of the same era also had it.

My Ford had a four barrel carb. The first 2 barrels were quite small, so if you were light on the throttle it was quite easy on fuel. 22 MPG imp cruising at 70 MPH. If I tromped it you could watch the gas guage drop :-) Today's cars are really quite reliable, but I get sticker shock. My first NEW car was a 1965 Austin Healey Sprite MK3. with real wire wheels and it was $2,200. My 2008 Pontiac Wave was 16,000 plus, plus, plus.
