Most fuel efficient car under $20K

Hey guys,

As the title states, i'd like to know what are the most fuel efficient cars under $20K.

I think tops is the new Accent...Is their any other that would beat it fuel & price wise (& style)?

Ford Fiesta, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Honda Civic, Fit.  Plenty of cars.

so you would pick all of those before the Accent? We're close to purchasing a car and fuel efficiency is #1 priority and being a hatch is #2. This would rule out the civic and corolla...between the fiesta, yaris & accent which is the better car?

Also the Accent and the Rio, my aunt has a Fit, nice car, its been very reliable, she says its heavily underpowered though.

mrs tpl has a Mk1 Fit and we don't find it underpowered at all.   To be fair, SW Ont is pretty flat AND  we have a proper transmission.   FWIW 115 bhp from 1.5 litres is the same specific output as my E46 BMW 330 was (230 bhp from 3 litres).   It has also been 100% reliable. No faults in 5 years.

I'd also vote for the Fit (and I did - I own one). No one can beat the versatility, thanks to Honda's clever folding rear seats. 5L/100km on the highway is nice, too.

With 5 adults in the car it takes a bit of time to get up to speed, but I've never really thought of it as underpowered. *shurg*

If efficiency is #1....a used Prius is your best bet.  It is also a hatch..and among the most reliable cars on the road.

actually, tpl, it's 109 HP from 1.5L ...  i also have had a Fit MK1.   i remember, because the Accent of the same era was rated 110HP.. but felt weaker, mainly due to 4 speed auto, vs 5 sp of the Fit.

to zorro,
it IS underpowered compared to pretty much anything out there nowadays, but it's still a zippy car..  you can floor that thing everywhere and you will still probably get 7~8L/100.     one bad thing is it does have small fuel tank, so you will have to go to the gas stations just as often...  just not pay as much each time.

but the utility of the Fit really cannot be beat.

I'm averaging just over 400 kms per fill up, and 7.2 lt/100 km on my Fit.  I think the tank is 42 lts.  On the highway I've gone 550 to 600 kms a few times on 1 tank.

Officially 10.6 gallons. So with reserve it might be 42. So hypothetically on the highway it should be able to do 800km to a tank.

Thanks Aquadorhj.   I guess the number for the MkII  stuck in my head.    Even so , as you say it is zippy and the most amazing thing is that it does not need to be revved to 6000 rpm.   It IS slow compared to the GTI but it is fast compared to most other vehicles and their drivers in Guelph!  :rofl:
