buying in another province
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:30:01 pm »
Due to limited availablility of anything in newfoundland, is there any hassle involved with buying a vehicle in another province?  Other than the travel back and forth of course.

Feedback appreciated as always!

I bought my motorcycle from a guy in Quebec.  It was a no brainer.  I just had to have an Ontario safety done to register it.

The only oddity can be sorting out who gets what taxes.  A quick call to your ministry of transportation office can sort that out.

I should have mentioned that when I bought the bike it was a private sale, so no taxes paid to Quebec.  I just paid the taxes at the Ontario MTO office when I registered it.  I don't remember if it was just the gst or both.

Probably not relevant to this case unless you are trailering the car but there is a weird law in Quebec (yeah, surprising) that if you are towing something with wheels on a trailer they want to you buy some sort of additional insurance from SAQ to cover the wheeled vehicle in tow, (not the trailer) in case it falls off.

I found this out a few years ago when purchasing a motorcycle in PQ.
I think it's incredibly stupid so I always just take my chances and tow anyway, but apparently I could be fined.

Hmm...first I've heard of that one.  It was March when I bought mine, so it was trailered home too.  Oh well...
