I'd say that 993 pricing is driven far more by virtue of it being last of the air cooled engines and with far lower production numbers, than looks. Looks vs. the 996, yes, but the 997 is equally attractive in my eyes, and in those of many other enthusiasts.  A 993S's wide body looks better but is an inferior handling car to the narrow body 993, yet has higher pricing due to it's even lower production numbers.

Ive extensively driven 993's, 996's and have owned a 997.1 and now a 997.2. I preferred the 993 over the 996, but the 997 over the 993. The 993 is a nice toy, but has plenty of problems of its own and the floor mounted clutch pedal makes driving in heavy traffic more than annoying.  A 997 is just as fun but can be a daily driver, year round.  And Ive had zero problems with both 997's, contrary to the article's warnings.

If you can handle having only 2 seats, the Cayman provides even sharper handling and most of the experience for less money, only sacrificing the 997's torque.

Despite my reluctance to buy anything German I would want a 997.2 4S for the reasons you mentioned. In April 2014 when I punt back the STi to Subaru for lease return if I spot a nice low km 4S kicking around for $50k it will be on my short list.
Considering a low mileage '09 4S is around $80K+ USD currently, I don't think they will drop $30K in two years.

 :( 997.1 then

Still don't believe me the 996 TT is the way to go for the money, eh?

The only problem with the 996TT and its awesome GT1 block is that it still looks like a 996 :run:

Indeed.  But I'd trade some of the looks for the much more reliable (and moddable) 996 TT.

I was not aware  ??? I will have to dig into this more. I'm not a fan of the 996 styling but could get over it  :P the 997 just looks like a 911 is suppose to.

EXCEPT the 4S does not have the extremely robust motorsport-based GT1 block.  Big difference...

Not a German car guy so I have much to learn. Before I take the plunge I will be seeking consultation  :)

That's a logical, pragmatic decision. Then again, as it's a Porsche and, for me, a would-be sports car purchase that already defies logic and pragmatism,  how it looks is just as important as how it runs. :)

I don't think ANY Porsche design is a looker, really.  But that's just me.
