My fist impression after the first 100 kms in a similar car is that this powertrain turned the Impreza into a Corolla AWD.  :( (save for the high price and not stellar fuel economy).

That's where the market is going, it seems. Even the new Legacy was a cop-out compared to the engaging model prior, all big and squidgy like an AWD LeSabre. But from what I understand sales were much better on the new car, so its working for them. Mind you, when they release a new WRX, many of the complaints of power and general 'softness' will be alleviated.

Chris said: "I doubt there are many who look forward to their favourite car being updated with a continuously variable transmission (CVT)".

Chris: I have intentially purchased 3 cars in part because they had CVTs:  Honda Civic HX, Audi A4, & now own a Subaru Outback CVT. Why? Because they have been the best compromise of power & economy for a 4 cyl engine & the are seamlessly smooth.  That may change with newer 6+ spd ATs, but I have been very pleased with all my CVTs. While I have not kept any of the cars beyond 80K all have performed smoothly, quietly, & efficiently with no issues. I may be an exception, but I remain a CVT fan.

"but I remain a CVT fan."

Ditto.  The Kizashi is the only car I've driven with a CVT but my phobia is certainly gone.  I thought it was excellent and quite superior to any autobox I've ever used.

Cheers,
John M.

I,on the other hand, have yet to drive a CVT that I really like. I've tried Murano,Maxima and Outback....all would be better if the auto option was a conventional 6 (or more) speed A/T.
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

I liked the CVT in the RX-h.  However, the Lexus also has a LOT of sound deadening and NVH countermeasures.
No place I'd rather be...
