The 2.0TFSI is a little underrated. It puts down 200hp at the wheels.

Do you have a reference for that? You mean the Jetta 2.0L measures 200hp at the wheels, or all VW/Audis with the 2.0L application put out 200hp at the wheels regardless of powertrain and driveline combination, because that would be a miraculous coincidence?!

Hey-oh, look at that. The GTI puts out as much power at the wheels what Volkswagen claims its makes at the flywheel, and a skosh more torque. Note that this is not some outlier dyno run -- it's representative of several pulls that were all repeatable within a few horsepower.

Inside line ran multiple dyno runs on a 2.0T GTI and it put out 200hp at the WHEELS so yes VW underates the engine

I'm not surprised. It both feels stronger and performs stronger than the rated number.  Thanks for the link.

In Germany, HP ratings I believe are different and are closer to what the engine is actually putting to the ground

I really like the new GLI but understand why some do not like it when compared to older models. VW has really done a good job in finding the value niche in Canada. I think there is a lot of value in this car for the money. I test drove with the DSG and really thought it is an excellent all round car for the segment it is in. Options are simple and straight forward. Kudos to Das Auto dudes!

+1 It's just a car with a different mission now, downmarket in a lot of areas, even if it does still hold up dynamically. I remember the Mk IV GLI from 7 years ago or so. That thing was hot, and also expensive - seems like a different beast to this new one.

See 2latecrew's post above for link. That will hold true for both manual and DSG equipped VWs.

According to MT GLI is just as fast as the Sonata turbo to 100kmh/h.  Is there a huge difference is weight or is this gearing/actual power output related?

All threads invariably engage the Sonata, it seems.  :)

Was it this test of the GLI that you are referring to, where they got 6.5 to 60, and a 1/4 mile in 15.1 sec @ 94.9 mph for the manual transmission GLI?

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1112_2012_volkswagen_jetta_gli_autobahn_first_test/

I've certainly seen reported tests on the Sonata 2.0T in that range.  I've also seen quicker - C/D had it 6.1 to 60 and a 1/4 mile in 14.5 @100mph. The usual caveats avbout the futility of comparing the results of non-simultaneous tests apply.

I'm not particularly shocked by either set of numbers.  The VW motor is likely stronger than they are reporting.  When C/D tested the Passat CC 2.0T against the 80hp-stronger Acura TSX V6, it only trailed by 0.4 sec to 60.  When I drove the Passat CC 2.0T back to back with the Sonata 2.0T (DSG versus auto), the Sonata felt noticeably stronger, but not hugely so.

That's like luxury sport sedan reviews always bringing up the 3 series ;)  Thats why.  When you're at top of the class everyone guns for you.

This author is terrible.

Actually, "This article is terrible" is a more useful comment. Jonathan has hopefully now realized that constant puns and innuendos just distract the reader from what they came for in the first place. Occasional, well placed diversions can give character to an article in the hands of an experienced writer (which I assume Jonathan isn't yet).So let's focus on the content of the article, not the author himself, as this criticism can help him improve in the future. For the record the second half of the article was much better.
"Let me help." A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over "I love you."

You certainly approach it in a more friendly manner to get the same point across. I still say the author is terrible, but it doesn't mean he can't improve.

If you want I could compromise by saying the article is awful and the editor must have been drunk to let this one go.
