I guess a $41k Altima Coupe is outta the question eh?    ;D

A Kia Optima EX sounds it would make a good choice for your Dad and would be within his budget.  Obviously the best thing to do would be get him to test drive the Sonata, Optima, Fusion, Altima, etc and see what he likes best.

Btw, I hope he wasn't hurt in the accident.

haha, well if my mom had her way she'd probably take a coupe (so long as it was red). I should have mentioned that he was fine - bruised his knee but thats about it.

Thanks for all the suggestions - will have to check out the Mazda 6 - forgot about that one. I did check out the Legacy and Passat but with power/heated seats you're looking at a significantly higher monthly payment for those trims - like $100+ I believe. Same with the Accord - Camry was closer I think but still wouldn't have been close enough for him to consider.

Anyway he sounds pretty set on another Altima believe it or not - I mean like he said his was good to him before this incident and its rated pretty much the highest for reliability in CR. I've got him thinking about the Optima though - he likes that 5yr/100kms warranty :)

I'll let you guys know what he settles on.

So the awesome warranty Kia and Hyundai offer is 5yr/100km?  :rofl2:

I thought it would be identical to the Mitsu 10yr/160km. Now that's pretty awesome warranty.

It's not German.  It doesn't need a HUGE warranty.   ;D

Glad to hear he's alright.

That said, its really hard to make a bad choice in this segment. Personally I would tend towards a newer design though (Sonata and Optima are the newest I think?).

Well, they went and drove both the Altima and the Optima tonight. My dad said he likes the ride of the Altima better - said it seemed more plush but then in the next breath said that the Optima rode more like the Impala they rented this summer to drive out west. Anyway other complaint was that the Optima was noisier than the Altima - not by much but noticeable to him he said. My mom prefers the passenger seat in the Optima - more padding she said whereas the Alty is like sitting on two rocks.

In the end they do like the extra features of the Optima but prefer the drive and familiarity of the Altima. As for the warranty he had an extended on the totaled Alty so he's going to see about getting that transferred or getting it factored in as part of the insurance deal. Pretty sure he's committed to the Altima now.

Thanks for the all the suggestions - I'll post back with the final details once I have them - maybe pricing etc might help someone on here down the road.

I was going to suggest a used 2008 Toyota Solara Coupe, but we've already been schooled on what a horrible car it is, so scratch that off your list.

Toyota might have discounts for 2011 models if there are some around.  Might be worth looking into.

If it were closer in price I'd have him take a look - but just web pricing its 30k for a Camry with heated powered seats (and you HAVE to get leather). Thats about 4k more than the Alty and Optima. I believe it was an even bigger gap with the Accord.

If your dad was close to T.O. I'd second rrockets suggestion of the CPO Lexus ES.

just because you web price does mean you have the price of the car on the road
when I got my truck I was a couple of g's lower then web pricing, also dealer have different bank financing rates, that could be as low as 3%

Altima is due for a complete makeover sometimes this year, needing a car today I would seriously look at the Sonata and Passat.  If the new Fusion was here, that would mix the cards a bit.

Solara! really?  Is there some post or article here I could read that supports this?
