Odd dead battery....
« on: January 23, 2012, 06:22:16 pm »
So I go to start my Titan today, no go but that was expected haven't driven it in months, let it charge come back after diner and it starts move it back.

Go to start Yaris, no go!  Completely dead.  We drive it Saturday so it wasn't long ago and it shows no signs of hard starts etc, we stopped a few times Saturday.

I charged it for 20 min and away it went no problem.  Was thinking alternator but it's brand new...  I guess I wait and see if I can reproduce very odd...

Dead again after sitting today!  Something must be drawing the power...  There is an aftermarket car starter and camera.

Yeah bluetooth backup mirror thing.

I found the problem... I think!

Looks like the trunk was slightly open still.  Funny thing there is a light on the dash to show you but the battery was so dead it wasn't showing.  And of course I just opened the door and tried to start it... with the door open.

Trunk has a light in it, but because of the tonneau cover you can't see the light on!

Hopefully that is it, went to go do a drain test on the battery and found my multimeter needs a new fuse... doh.

^^^Glad to hear that you think you solved it. Nothing as frustrating as a dead car battery to start your day.

We had a similar issue with the SX4 last winter and also tracked it down to the trunk light. In our case the trunk was not slightly ajar but somehow we had managed to turn the little switch on the trunk light to the "On" position rather than the normal "Controlled by door" setting.

We killed the battery in our Outback once when tossing large items in the back, hit the light switch and didn't notice.  Caught it on a couple more occasions before the battery went dead.
