Toyota ECP (Extended Care Program) ... Is it worth buying?
« on: January 21, 2012, 11:19:03 pm »
Hi:

I just bought a used 2007 Camry (Hybrid) that has 77,000 KM.  The original factory warranty has already expired but the only warranty left is the balance of the Hybrid system - which expired in 3 more years.

I am being offered the ECP program which covers the car for another 3 years or 60,000 KM for $1600+tax.  According to the sales person, the ECP is an extension of the original warranty?  Is it worth it for this kind of car with that age?

Your advise is appreciated.

Al

have you check out the link http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObjects/WWW.woa/25/wo/Home.Owners.ECP.Used.Component.Benefits-AGkDhWORKZPWv6NHwADLKw/3.9?o300332e%2ehtml

you would not need can, so that would $300 off the price

So is warranty for $433 a year will give you peace of minded

I did get the extended warranty for our Prius, but it also included 4  oil  changes.
So it also lower the over all price

Check out a Camry hybrid forum to see if people are having problems

Based on the reputation that Toyota has when it comes to reliability, I would pass.
A few years ago I looked into an extended warranty for a Honda Gold Wing (worth $26,000 new).  Canadian dealers wanted close to $1600 for the warranty.  US dealers were selling it for as little as $450.
Auto manufacturers and private companies selling extended warranties are in it for one reason: profit. They know the odds are in their favour.

Exactly, that is why I pay extra when I but a Toyota, Honda, or Subaru.

Take stock in this, coming from an ex car salesman and business manager that used to make a pantload of money off extended warranties. They're not worth the paper they are written on, especially for a Toyota.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

As some posters on this forum will tell you, there has never been a known instance in recorded history in which a Toyota needed a repair. ;D

Seriously - I would pass on it for a variety of reasons.  Even you keep the car there is a good chance you will not recover your money.  Even if you do break even, you pre-paid and lost the time value of money.  If you sell, trade or total the car, the value added is disproportionately low to its cost.

Listen to a VW owner.  I skipped the extended warranty on the most unreliable brand in the history of cars.  My repair costs from year 5-7 are the following which starts 1 year later that yours since my initial warranty was 4 years (Thanks to truedelta.com for keeping track of this stuff :) )

Mar 2007   86000km   $210.00   Noise gets louder the faster you drive. Sounds like a helicopter in the distance. Passenger Front Wheel Bearing was issue.
Sep 2008   123000km   $45.00   AM Radio reception poor. Replaced antenna at top of car. Radio now works.
Oct 2008   125000km   $359.00   When coming to a stop, car began shuddering. Check engine light appeared. Symptoms would go away while driving and appear stopped at idle. Dealer replaced vacuum pump and associated hoses.

$615(taxes incl) total, it looks I have $1000 in my pocket.  If your extended warranty includes a deductible, I'm even further ahead. There is always a chance you will have more repairs, but the odds are in your favour. Drivetrain is 5 years, battery stuff is covered, I wouldn't worry.

the ECP is an extension of the original warranty?

Depends on which one you get?  It seems you have been quoted the full monty (Comprehensive).  That covers the entire vehicle like on the day it was new.  Plus a bunch of trip interruption benefits.

I dunno, it's hard to say @$1800 tax in.  It's half in the USA.  ::)

It depends on what you paid for the unit.

Sep 2008   123000km   $45.00   AM Radio reception poor. Replaced antenna at top of car. Radio now works.    Who's gonna quibble over $45??? I wouldn't. Most of these extended plans have a $50 deductible.
Oct 2008   125000km   $359.00   When coming to a stop, car began shuddering. Check engine light appeared. Symptoms would go away while driving and appear stopped at idle. Dealer replaced vacuum pump and associated hoses. Pierburg air pump perhaps? Late 90's Volvo's had them as well as a finicky EGR system on the turbo models that would plug up. Somewhat interpretable as maintenance, hardly worth pay $1800 for an extended warranty

Case and point well proven on a vehicle that is known to be finicky.

Friend bought a used 2006ish corolla and was offered extended warranty. He took it. Within one year he had a new intake gasket, various check engine lights, and a new ECU ($$$). It turned out to be worth it for him.
