Camping in a Hatchback Car
« on: January 21, 2012, 05:25:17 pm »
I'm looking for tips for a solo drive south to Florida on Hwy 75 mid February and a stop at Nashville (1st night) on things like safe or beautiful campsites
not too far from Interstate hwys.  Using Trucker Stop showers (or taking a mobile set-up).
Any advices on the gear to take.  Walmarts free overnighting.  ( I read you should not try it at Hwy. Rest Stops).
I'm not saying anything to my wife who has a week with friends and flew one-way.  I have a propane BBQ and will eat out mostly.

Any advices/warnings/suggestions.  Thanks in advance.

Why do you need to drive in the first place?

it been almost 20 years since I drove there, but I know it was an easy drive to Knoxville and then next Tampa
I would just use a motel for the night

Also check out flying for one person it could be cheaper

If I ever drove it again (and believe me I am not considering ever again) I would want to take a different route than 75 at least and only stay at 'very nice' accommodations.
At least you have a nice (A7) vehicle to drive in

I'm not to sure you'll be admitted to a KOA if you arrive at night and tell them you're sleeping in your car for one night. But really  ???, you actually going to sleep in your car to save $75.00.  ::)

And what the heck are you going to do with a propane barbecue?

Unless they are soy burgers, you'll smell (according to the books I read about round-the-world-sailing and hiring crew.  There are some crew who won't hire on with meat eaters!)

I believe the journey more important than the destination (after-all we are talking Florida here) and I've got 1,000 places I must see before I die.

KOA will take me bye-the-way (if I have a tent).  Thanks for the driving offer safristi, but I love driving.  And I've found the ACC with radar reacting speed-control so very relaxing because in 10K kms it has proven full-proof.  I could go all day and never touch the brakes, I have that much confidence in it.

BUT THERE MUST BE SOME SUPPORTERS OUT THERE!

You're driving to Tennessee (12 hours minimum, probably 14 hours), pitching a tent at night in the rain @ 40F and after all that you're going to barbecue a frozen piece of fish.  ???

That's beyond insane.

Gord; Pics are mandatory on this one.  :)

Count me as one.  Personally, I think it's gonna be a damn cool adventure for you.  When I was in high school, I used to take off for a few days down to Maine by myself and I always slept in the hatchback of my Mustang.  I'd have no issues whatsoever doing what you are doing.  Have fun and enjoy the road trip!

BUT THERE MUST BE SOME SUPPORTERS OUT THERE!

:hello:  Here I am!

I think your idea is great and I still do it at least one or twice a year. Why bother paying any money for a hotel or campsite when you are going to be getting in late and leaving early. I've camped in my car at hwy rest stops, just off the hwy, trail heads and even a Walmart. My buddy even set his tent up in a Walmart parking lot once.

We bought our 6-wgn specifically for this reason. With at roof box on top, it opened up a lot of extra room so we could bunk down in the back. With the seats folded down it had a roomy 6+feet of space. It became out hotel for long drive across the USA.

Old picture of a wagon camp out.

Get your self a comfy sleeping pad, should cost approx $100 or less. A decent sleeping bag, $100-200. You may even have all these things.

I usually crack the window to keep the air circulating although I don't think you would die overnight with it closed. I just like the fresh air. Even down to freezing its much warmer in a car than sleeping in a tent.

Now that we have the GTi there is less room for sleeping in the back. Its fine for one person but two is crowded. Found out one weekend in Lake Placid when the hotel gave our rooms away. Found a nice field off the hwy (we know a few good spots down there) and bunkered down. It was a cold night, maybe -5C and we didn't bring any sleeping gear (why bother when you have a hotel) and survived perfectly fine with just a down jacket and tarp over us. Heck, I've slept in a ditch once on a cold night (long story) with just a tarp over me and was fine.

Since you are thinking about stopping in TN, there should be some nice spots just into the Smokies that would have a great overlook for that morning sunrise.

Do it an enjoy.

Given the A7, it's not what I would have expected, but I think it'll be an interesting trip.

I had a Ranger with a cap that I spent a few nights in back in the 1980s. Pretty much stuck with tents since.

Brilliant!  A wet practice run.  Furthering Quad's lake side experience; Gord, after Wiarton bare right and enter the "Reservation" at night and find yourself one of those nice water view spots like Quad always manages to find.  Just a heads up; in the morning upon coming to you might find your A7 is minus the 7 part of the equation.

Although I think this would get you well primed; re: camping in a field or Walmart in Tennessee as those A7s certainly tend to blend into the local vibe quite well.

Keep us posted. :)

PS, I'll drive your A7 down to Florida for $1K cash and 2 return flights.  My schedule though.

I like this idea, I love road trips and have slept in many rental cars in the past.  Slept in a 2 door alero through the trunk pass through too.

Ok.  I have done this with my drag/bike racing.  Sleeping out of a car.  I wanted VERY fast set-up.  I used a Morpho AR tent.  The beams inflate.  Literally took 2 minutes to set-up.  Waterproof, sturdy...great tent.  And packs about the size of a large loaf of bread.

The next evolution was when I used an Aliner 400 (called the "A Lite" now).  It is a very small rigid wall tow behind camper.  Now hear me out.  It's teeny..the smallest of the Aliners.  But could be towed by even the Echo.  The safety I felt was immediate, being that you're in a lockable trailer.  And you can stow stuff in it when not in use.  I've known people to buy these and use them for a year...or a trip...then sell them.  Loved it!!

FWIW, we found parking lot camping better when done at Camping World lots rather than Walmart lots. Nearly without fail there was a cool little camping community when we stayed there.
