Elantra Coupe Undisguised...

The Civic Coupe will have company. The tail pipe is definitely not the production unit...

Combining sales of both sedan and coupe will definitely make the Elantra one of the most popular cars in the country.

A no brainer since the Elantra sedan has more of a 4 door coupe profile anyway.

Meh ... unimpressive. It's the exact same thing as the sedan minus 2 doors and a small spoiler.  The Civic coupe tries to look a little different.  I would be much more interested in a 5-door hatch.  I know I know ... they already have the Accent and the Veloster.

Can a (un)sporty coupe significantly boost the sales of an already popular sedan?

I know what you mean. I thought perhaps the rear sheet metal would be changed to reflect the coupe nature of the vehicle but it looks like the same thing with two less doors. Interesting to see what a SE version might be like and if some of the smaller pieces are at least worked over for that version.

Btw the hatch is coming: http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/wp-content/uploads//2011/09/Hyundai-i301-1024x682.jpg

Looks good to me.  Hopefully the production models will be dent-free.  The 200-plus hp turbo model should be interesting.  Laughed out loud at the Civic being propped up as an example of differentiation between coup and sedan.  Year in and year out the two look essentially the same minus the door count.

The civic coupe and sedan look quite different to me

Yep, they sure do.  Hard to tell they are even from the same manufacturer.  ::)

To me, the more significant question is "Are coupe and sedan both attractive designs?" rather than "Are coupe and sedan as different from each other as possible.

-the OP link doesn't open for me.

I think it looks good, better than the sedan, with properly sized doors and 5 spoke rims. I wouldn't worry about it being visually differentiated from the sedan, but rather what changes will be done to steering and suspension. And more importantly, if there is going to be a larger or turbo engine.

Looks great. But then, so does the sedan, and the sedan is a lot more practical. It will be interested to see how differently it drives...

The hatchback, OTOH, looks fantastic. :)

Agreed.  I think we will see the turbo engine.  It would not make sense in terms of economies of scale for Hyundai to develop that motor and only use it in the Veloster Turbo.  It makes sense in this application for sure.  Frankly, I hope they put it in a sport version of the sedan as well and make it available with a 6-speed manual and more buttoned-down suspension.

Yet another hotty from Hyundai, man they are relentless!!  The Civic coupe or sedan does zilch for me, it's screams cheap.

The coupe styling of many 4 door cars these days has really destroyed the value of a 2 door. In the past, a buyer could always say they prefer the sporty styling of the 2 door version. Now all they can say is, "I couldn't afford the 4 door."

2 door coupe still beats the 4 door "daddy" in terms of usable interior volume. You had to see what size a TV box I once loaded into a Grand AM through the passenger door. The front seat could be folded almost flat to the back seat, even BestBuy folks couldn't believe it. I'd never be able to do it with the Sonata.
Besides, coupes' doors are more friendly for checking blind spots. I'll buy a coupe every time over the same car with 4 doors provided the price is the same.

Gah, if Hyundai did that I'd surely have to trade in my current Elantra...and it isn't even a year old!

No surprise here, styling on the latest itteration of Elantra has always screamed coupe.

That said, how many inexpensive 2 door beasts does Hyundai need? Veloster and Genesis already on the streets, and now the Elantra sandwiched in the middle?
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

Good point.  But then lets not complain about manufacturers providing too many sporty or quasi-sporty offerings.  That's a coupe-crowded lineup - but you couldn't really describe any one of those three as a duplicate of the other.
