^^ mmret, the shifts are fast because that car is equipped with the Sport Auto Option with paddle shifters, which is available as an option for the Sport Line and M Sport models.

The Sport Auto option with paddle shifters shifts noticeably faster than the regular auto transmission in manual mode.

So, if you're an enthusiast- get that!   :P

So does that Sport Auto thing actually have different hardware in the transmission or are all 8AT's capable of this and its just some software trick?

I would suspect the latter. Kind of cheesy for BMW to make it an option.

I actually don't mind the N20 sound. Might drop by for a test drive.

Why is it chessy? Not everyone wants it. People on here do not make up the majority of the buying public...

It should be a D / DS mode thing.

No, because that would raise the cost to everyone, including those that do not want it(which may be the majority BTW).

I think his point is that if it's just a matter of the tranny being programed differently there is no real additional cost to BMW and therefore charging for the option is a little questionable.

Buttons are pretty cheap. Paddle shifters perhaps cost a little more if not mass produced.

But buttons are damn cheap.

Also I guess its not questionable that they're charging for it that way. But its kind of charging for something that has no marginal production cost. Price discrimination / rent seeking. Standard business practise. Still cheesy. :P

You cannot get SAP and the 28i N20 Turbo engine in Canada. No SAP in 28i at all.

SAP in 35i but only as part of 12-item MSport pkg for $2900. Does not include adjustable suspension without the additional Dynamic Comfort Pkg for $1500 more.

Not as simple as a programming change to the tranny.

^ I'm not sure how it's like on the X3 forum, but on the 3-series forums, there are people who mod and retrofit and code like crazy. I'm not sure if age has anything to do with it. But the drivers there are very young.

If it's an easy retrofit or something that can be activated by coding, etc., it will be done, and will be done quickly after the turbo-4 models start selling....

Rumours are that a diesel engine will also find its way into the X3 in 2012.

It sounds like it might be the 30d but I'm hoping for the 35d... the diesel will have the performance of the 35i and better fuel economy than the 28i/n20.

I can attest to this.  Upshifts are quick.  M Sport Package makes it loud too.

The dealership told me today the diesel won't be installed in the X3 in 2012 but they told me the same thing about the n20 too... who knows?  Maybe BMWNA keeps the dealership's in the dark until the last minute too. ???

I usually know things before the BMW dealer. But they will follow up for me quickly and usually confirm for me as soon as they can. Sometimes they do not get the confirmation until weeks later.

They've known me for two years now. I have known things before the general manager, etc. They like to tease me because my track record has been, well, 100% to date. :) It's all because of the info on the forums, from insiders, etc. I noticed you're active on the X3 forum now. You will have the same track record as me.

I think it's because insiders drop hints, leak info before. And unlike us potential buyers with keen interest in 1 or 2 models, they have all the models to know about. But my dealership has a really good attitude I find... They try to confirm for me as soon as they're able to.

I think you're right Julie, the forums are usually pretty good a scaring up the 'real' news on products.  Scott26 from bimmerfest says that the diesel will be available and I think he is an insider.

Wasn't it you who just bought the X3 28i?

No, I just have my 335i. (I have another car though on order.)

My husband on the other hand is interested in an X3. He is also more interested in the -28i model or the eventual diesel model. But not for another year...

Next time I talk to my dealer, I'll ask him... see if he might be able to get some confirmation...

P.S. I think they're know more though, after March...
