Looking to replace all season tires on my '04 Mazda3
« on: January 19, 2012, 12:59:36 pm »
I'm heading to Florida next week and have 4/32" left on my all season Toyo Proxes TPT 195x65x15 H91.  My mechanic told me I could make it there with these so I'm wondering, do I replace now, in Florida, or when do i hang on until i get back I get back home in April. I can save some $ by replacing then in Florida.

Now everybody wants to sell me tires-with a range of installed prices from $575 (CTC) Goodyear Allegra Touring Fuel Max to Nokian enTire $731 (Kal Tire), to Michelin Primacy MXV4 $772 (Costco). There are several other local firms suggesting Dunlop Signature, Toyo Versado LXII, Bridgestone Turanza, Michelin Destiny etc. with various prices in the $700-800 range.

I see in todays CTC flyer that the Motomaster Touring AW/H, the Hankook Optimo 4s are on sale.

I'm very confused. I use snows in the winter, might drive 15k in a year, so I'm not sure if need high end tires, except for the comfort factor.
Any recommendations would be welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Wait to buy tires till you get to Florida, that way you can get some really nice summer tires for way cheaper than some all seasons up here. With summer tires, the car will handle better, ride better and they will be quiter than all seasons.

What are you looking for?  Handling or comfort?  Long wear or grip?

Well, based on the Toyos which I've had on the car since the spring of '06 (80-90000k), I'd say long wear & comfort!

Michelin's Harmony is pretty comfy and rated at 130k kms.

The Yoko Avid Envigors also have a high treadwear rating.

If you order through tire rack you can have it sent to an installer near where you'll be staying.  Then just head there once the tires have arrived and get them put on.  Easy as pie and you'll save a fortune.

^^ What this guy said, tire rack is the most painless way to get tires. Just find a distributor near where you are staying in Florida. Also, when on tirerack.com, you can get some real good firsthand reviews on tires, see whats the best for you.

Thank you all......now I see some of the ones mentioned here are rated 89 T (i.e. Michelin Harmony) whereas my Toyos were 91H. What's the difference?

The numbers relate to the load rating - higher number = higher load carrying capacity.  The letter (H, T) refers to the speed rating.

89 and 91 are load ratings. T and H are speed ratings. Look them up on the net, load rating being a car, you dont really care about, speed ratings just tell you how high performance the tire is.

^^ I suppose the OP can make up his own mind, but I know that matching the load index is something that I "care about" - even on a passenger car.

Have narrowed my search down to the Bridgestone Turanza Serenity-$388 before shipping to installer in Florida/taxes/installation. I was quoted $681 @Costco here.
