Subaru AWD + no snow tires + snow = fail
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:28:35 pm »
Check out the vid.  About 1/2 way through, first a 4WD Toyota and then a Forester is done for thanks to no snow tires.  Later, an Outback flies up the street, obviously on some proper rubber.  A FWD owner is installing chains on the rear tires.  Wish the vid showed the result of that...

It amazes me that people who have AWD don't think they need snow tires. Our Legacy is of course AWD, and sports snow tires at this time of year.

No problems with hills. Yesterday, our son who is using the vehicle to go to Unverisity, lamented on how people don't know how to drive in snow. He was on a slight hill behind some lady driving a jeep. She was going slow but making progresss, nobody ahead of her when for no apparent reason she stopped and then tried to get going again, but just started spinning her wheels. My son decided to go around her as there was room on the four lane stretch of road. Just as he did, her vehicle slid backwards hitting the vehicle that was originally behind my son. Glad he decided to go around. The beauty of AWD and proper snows.

Its the same with the 4x4 truck people who have the stock all seasons or some aggresive mud tires and are completely surprised when they fly off into the ditch. Owning a 4x4 truck, im still behind the idea that an awd car with snow tires is the ultimate transport on an icy road.

So true.  AWD with snows can't be beat.  But AWD without snows can almost be a liability - initial traction at launch fools you into thinking you have more traction than you do.  A point to reflect upon while sitting in the ditch, waiting for the tow truck.

Totally agree.  Funny thing is that the dealership where I bought my 4x4 was adament that winter tires were unnecessary...b/c it was a 4x4.

If you have ever driven in Seattle you know how steep some of those hills can be. Add any level of slippage and things get crazy fast.

I always thought snot-slick wet snow + hills - winter tires = carnage in Seattle.

Yup.  ;D I remember one from a few years ago showing all kinds of vehicles - cars, trucks, couple of buses - sliding uncontrollably down an icy hill. Could have been shot from the same window, from what I remember of it. I guess in Seattle, you either buy winters for the few snowfalls they get in a year, or you just don't drive when it does snow.

Edit to add, I'm with wing - there's gotta be ice on that road. If that was only snow/slush, that Forester wouldn't look so useless. And that Outback that goes whizzing past must've had studded tires (WSDOT says they're legal there November-March).

Awesome!

Thanks for sharing.

I've noticed that even with Dunlop Wintersport 3D, driving in snow and going uphill is a daunting task for the little car.

So during snow days, i just take the transit.
