The best trucks I looked at were old man trucks. Some 60 or 70 year old snowbird that has low mileage truck but wants to upgrade to whatever this years latest and greates version is.

Thats pretty much what mine was when I bought it.  70 year old farmer, upgrading to a new model.  It was 3 years old with 45K on it.  He traded it in at the local dealer, but the dealer gave me his name so I called him up and had a good chat about the truck with him.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

The dealer called the man first and asked if they could pass on his information.

I passed one up last year, a 2500HD, was 10 years old and like 50K on it.  Used only for hauling his camper.  Thing was like new and a decent price.  Im trying to think why I talked my self out of it, because I sure havent found anything like that since

Without having read the whole thread, have you checked out an '09 and up F150?  If you're wanting room, the only other that comes close (if they're not the same or maybe it's bigger, I don't have time to check) is the Tundra.  Seriously, you should let the kids come with, and put them in the back.  Then see if you still like the looks of the Chevy more.  If they had a cab as big, I might have just bought one of theirs instead, but they don't; it's tighter than my Taurus in the back of a GM truck.  It's prairie flat and expansive ("e" for the "a"?  ::) lol) in a Ford.  Plus the box on a Ford will swallow almost an entire GM truck, if you get the bigger bed.  Another reason I wouldn't pick a GM.  I like a big box.  On my truck.

That is on thing I did not like on the Ford
first the box floor is to high to get stuff into, second, the hight of the box, it atleast 2-3 inches higher, put a cap on and the side boxes are to high to get tools into.
The top of of the Ford box is over my sister in laws husband head

That's why you get the longer bed...you can order the side steps which you kick out, and step on them and you can reach inside.  They're awesome.  And don't forget about the "Man Step" as GM (I think?) put it, on the tailgate...best darn invention ever.  I may not be that old, but my knees don't like getting in the back of any truck, and let me tell you, I've had more stares of jealousy when I pull that thing out, by guys older than me who don't have it, than not.

Too bad about your bro-in-law...guess he'd be better off with a...short box.  ;D

tailgate is on the truck for the drive home from the dealer and then it off
it would look dorky to use side steps to get into the side of the cab
