Long time reader and learner, first question.
Appreciate the time you guys put into the forum, learnt a lot.

There is a 2011 Toyota Sienna LE 8 passenger with roughly 5 thousand Kms at a dealership near me.
It has wind deflectors , mats, etc added - mats not wanted deflectors I can take or leave.
It also has new blizzaks on the stock rims and they'll include the original all-seasons and they're offering $2k off.
It's a vehicle my wife loves, but the discount seems low but I would appreciate any advice I can get to what price would be fair to me, and the dealer.

Thanks

They said on 2011 base v6 they could move $1k, and they had a bit more room on a 2011 v6 LE 8 passenger.
I was interested too know how much having 5000km actually affected the value.
I should add that it's $2k off full retail price that they're offering.

The sales guy has been really good at explaining the features, differences, etc. and taking the time to talk to us compared to a lot of other dealers that weren't really interested in talking to us or explaining why their vehicle was better than the competition.

So, I don't want to screw the guy, I just don't want to find out later that I got screwed on the deal.
I don't have a lot of experience negotiating car purchases so hoping that someone has had a similar experience or a bit more knowledge than me to guide me right.

Thanks

Whats the scoop with the van? Repo? Demo? Divorce? Always good to know.

If I am not mistaken you can say bye bye to freight/PDI with no loss to the dealer. Thats nearly $2k, though MSRP doesn't include it so...

Take a look at carcostcanada to get an idea of the embedded margin in a new one. V6 LE 8 passenger lists around $33k so I guess should be roughly $3000 to 3500 between Invoice and MSRP.

5k on it plus you can't choose the color, etc., knock off $2k. Possibly more, but this is the hardest part.

Add in $600 for the tires (which are actually useful) and random accessories (up to you to judge value there).

How long has the warranty been running?

I would try for $4k off list plus any cash purchase discounts available from Toyota. I assume this vehicle does not qualify for subsidised lease/finance rates? If you can pay cash that might be your advantage here compared to other potential buyers (hard to say though, depends on lease/finance program terms)

Keep in mind though if you got $4k off MSRP, thats nearly $6k+tax+tires once you toss in the fact you don't pay freight.

All that said, its actually not easy to price these things IMHO, there just aren't enough examples of sub 10k cars for sale out there to get a good handle on what pricing should be.
Everything in life is relative.

Best to quote out the door price before taxes and indicate exact trim package.  Such and such "off" type of comparison pricing is too confusing when dealing with a used non current vehicle.  Not that far removed from buying based on monthly payments.

^^ Agreed.  :D

Forget about trying to buy a discount and concentrate on buying the vehicle.

Vital details are missing from your post - is this a "new" (never registered) vehicle? Is it a used trade in? It sounds like a trade due to the winter tires, deflectors, etc, but who knows if the dealership lets its managers equip their demos as they wish.

If it is a new "demo", then the price will never be low enough to satisfy the forum regulars. They expect demos to be priced as used vehicles when the reality for the dealer is that they have much different costs to deal with. If you fall into the same category then you are better off just negotiating on a brand new one. Leave the demos for someone else.

Advice about "forgetting about the freight charge" is also suspect if this is a new demo. I don't have intimate knowledge of Toyota's invoices but I'm confident they don't differ significantly in this regard from Ford's. The freight charge that appears on the window sticker is charged at the same amount on the dealer's invoice from the manufacturer. So it forms part of their cost. Ignore it if you like but it just boils down to what the out the door price is anyway.

Yes.  Not waived on "dealer" cars or if it is it gets buried somewhere such as the trade.

thanks for all the comments.
It's the sales guy's demo from the dealership pretty certain it's not 'new' as it has 5000 km on it, so I'm looking at it as more of a used car than a new car.

Invoice to retail difference according to carcostcanada is $2249.
I want to lease for 36 months with the intent to purchase after because I want the ability to give it back in case the vehicle turns into something less reliable than consumer reports is saying.

The sales guy has been good so don't want to deny him the sale, unless of course we can't come to a mutually acceptable deal.
I'll check out the prius thread mentioned for the NS guy just in case though.

Appreciate the comments regarding the freight, not sure where to go form there with that as it is not a new car. I'm not sure how long the warranty has been running either.
The sales guy did include the freight when running the costs through the website, and it did include the discount from Toyota HQ $1500.

I'm not trying to buy a discount just want to make sure that the deal we get is fair for all.
Balanced just a little bit more to my side would be nice of course   :)

Appreciate any more advice/suggestions you guys have.

All waranties will commence like new the day you take possesion.  If you lease the 5K plus kms will be added to your overall mileage limit.  So it's more of a new car than a traditional used car.

As for your monthly payment and buy out; you're on your own on that.  :)

If you want to lease, I think you'd be better off with brand new?
In my experience, (this was 15 yrs ago, mind you...) I looked at leasing a dealer demo - it was a better deal to lease a new one.

Hence my advice to forget about the demo and look at a brand new one. Although you may consider it "used" it has new car costs to the dealer. If it was a used car (as in a trade in, or ex-rental auction purchase, the dealer's cost would probably be 20% lower. You can try, but I haven't witnessed many demos sold at real used car prices.

Yup, I'm with Cord.  Forget this demo van.  The $2K they're offering is the $2K that Toyota has in cash on that van, so they're asking you to pay MSRP for a van with 5000km on it.  Get a new one.
