To me these were the most advance vehicles of all time when compared to all the other vehicles for their time.  These cars had insane speed compared to their rivals....although they kept killing their drivers with their insane speed.

 The article mentions Tazio Nuvolari as the replacement for the deceased lead driver for Auto Union in the late 30's...He was a ferociously competitive man...I read, many years ago, an account of him racing in a car that had caught fire...His answer to that was to go faster to blow it out...and the steering wheel came off the car and he was driving it with the hub of the steering shaft, until he lost control and ended that race...What a man!!  iac...hehe   Jack
