It is amazing to me that while the Japanese improved their reliability dramatically over a period of say a decade after they arrived in NA, the British continued to make garbage over a 60 year period.

Not that I don't love Jags, because I do.  I worked in a Jag garage when I was 15 - 17 and the cars were phenomenal from a design point of view.  However, now they are nothing special on that front and the reliability continues, as always, to lag badly.

GO ahead and buy a used, out of warranty, Jag if you are crazy or have just won the lottery and want to fill out that 6 car garage.  Hopefully the other 5 cars are more reliable.

Great name, great history but why buy one?  When someone tries to sell you tradition in a technical world, it's time to leave.

I've always thought of Jags as wonderful "Garage Sculpture"....lovely to look at and lots of fun on the odd sunny day they happen to start.

Good question.  The fact that the brand still exists (for the time being) reveals that a car purchase is a multi-facted decision. Reliability is apparently only one of many purchasing critiera.

No kidding. But reliability, while not the only criteria to consider, is typically one of the more important aspects to consider.

AS a former Contour SVT owner I always had a soft spot for the Jag X type. Could be a sleeper used car bargain.

I have to admit a soft spot for oddball cars, but IMHO the X-Type was the best-looking, and best-proportioned Jag of the era.  I still see them around, and they still turn my head.

The short live of this car just confirms the british gona sale all their brand names and reestablish the reputation the way thei did it with Bentley, RR and Mini. And something more - they must invest in R&D as japanese did otherwise bye-bye british luxury cars...germans are tough to beat, japanese are the most reliable and koreans and chinese are coming in this class soon!

X Type was based on the Ford Mondeo. Essentially a Mondeo with nicer materials. With Jag splitting from Ford in 2009(?) the writing was on the wall for the X type. The new generation Mondeo is a good car.

I share your soft spot for the x-type.  The lower used pricing does make it a tempting alternative to other boring but more reliable alternatives.

I wonder if the AWD in the X type dulled the awesome steering feel and handling of the Contour SVT?

I saw an X-Type wagon like that on the road around here a couple of months ago.  It's the only one I've ever seen.

Looks nicer in darker colours. After I got rid of my SVT Contour I came close to buying a X type wagon (3.0 L V6 with manual) but chickened out. I settled for a Passat wagon. Later when I was replacing the Passat with a more performance oriented wagon the manual had been dropped from the X type. That and the interior is pretty cozy. Ended up with the V70R instead.
