When I was posted out in Trenton, Ontario and we had an ice storm, I found pouring a little aircraft de-icing fluid on to the windshield was the best way to thaw it. Pour it on, have a smoke and shell be nice and clear in a few minutes  ;D  if you do not have acess to an airport, pouring some windshield washer fluid directly on the wipers should solve your problems, just remember to wait.

My Forester has the same thing.  It's a big heated element at the bottom of the windshield.  Works great!

Is this why I see some many Subarus with cracked windshields??

FWIW, they also have window de-icer you spray on the exterior of the windshield.  Comes in a spray bottle.  Good to use 1st thing in the morning.
I dunno RR.  Mine has never cracked, and neither have either of the heated mirrors.

7 of the 10 Subarus we looked at (all were used) had cracked windshields.  Seems far too common to be a coincidence?
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

Here in Calgary my vehicles more often have a cracked windshield than not..

Our Outback windshield cracked right at the heated section.  We had a thread on here last year about Subaru windshields.
