Auto Tech: Torque-to-yield bolts
« on: January 04, 2012, 03:03:21 am »

Many engines, transmissions and suspensions now use torque-to-yield bolts to connect major assemblies.  Jim Kerr explains why.

Flywheels come to mind.

Flywheels come to mind.

?  as a specific application for these bolts?   I don't see why as there are no real space limitations and the flywheel can be positioned on splines so the bolts won't be doing much.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I'd need a pic regarding those splines  ???   Any flywheel I've replaced at most has a locating pin, that's all (Porsche/BMW).  Those bolts come loose and it's game over.

x2... I've seen pilot bearings in the centre of the flywheel sitting on the snout of the transmissions input shaft, but the splines don't do anything to hold the flywheel itself in place. The only thing riding the splines there is the clutch.

Any new technology in bolts/torque since this article was first shown in 2004?  Surely, in the automotive world, there can't be a lack of new things to write about?
