Can We Discuss The New Quebec Vehicle Inspection?
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:57:52 am »
I tried to start a post with this subject, but it was deleted. Is there a reason, or a similar post already open?

So what does this inspection involve?...how much does it cost?....how often is it required?

Here in NB we have annual safety inspections. They're pretty basic (quick check of steering, brakes, suspension, tires and making sure lights, wipers etc are all working) The cost is $25. There is some talk of exempting new cars for the first 3 years...that probably makes some sense

Apparently it was just for emissions for any car older than 8 years old. So that means no one will pass.  ::)

According to the Gazette article I read a month ago, it applies even to new cars, will cost $60, and presumably will connect directly to OBDII vehicles (1996+), therefore not permitting "check engine light" vehicles to drive away until the light goes off.

I suppose this will also allow the Gov to monitor how many miles one puts on in a year, and charge a premium? Maybe selling this info to ins Co's? And maybe monitoring the GPS/black box systems found in many (all?) newer cars, to check on (illegal) speeds attained, etc???

I wonder if the law will have a sniffer exhaust test? And modified exhaust? Quebec is famously know for not allowing loud Harley pipes. And will it affect Motorcycles?

Will one be able to just drive in? Or is an appointment neccesarY? And what will the sticker look like?

I just read the Gazette article.    Doing an emissions check on cars and light trucks maybe when the are 3 or 4 years old and then every year seems like a good plan.   Insisting that all OBDII faults are addressed another good idea.    May as well then check all lights including legality ( no HID bulbs in convention reflectors for example) and aim, wipers, tires, brakes, shocks( including suspension height to be oem) and rust  on the underside.   Perhaps a 1 hour inspewction costin g $150 or so.    I think that, if it were constitutional, that ALL provinces should have a safety check like that.

As for collecting statistics on vehicle mileage , in provinces with public insurance it would be interesting to see if they could charge insurnace for the km.

As for the black box.   I think that they only hold speed data for a few seconds for use in a crash.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Ontario needs this, in addition to the existing emissions testing.  Yesterday I was going back to my car in the mall parking lot when I walked past an older Ford Ranger.  It has large holes in the rear fenders and nearly bald tires.

What we need in this country and particularly in Ontario is DEREGULATION.  In not to many years, Ontario and Quebec certainly, will be poor jurisdictions similar to Michigan, Ohio et al.  So either way the enforcement personnel won't be there so lets just lay off the silly regulations now and make what will be a very stressful existence for most ppl just a little less so.

I once upon a I time drove vehicles with holes in the body panels.  I can remember my mom's 57 Dodge with holes in the floor.  The universe was not harmed in any way by these holes.

What's wrong with having some speed-holes? Ontario promotes the speed-hole program by salting the roads at the rate they do.
The amount of accidents caused by un-maintained vehicles is minuscule compared to just about any other statistic.

Having annual inspections also means annually getting reamed by garages.  My mom seems to always be spending $$$ usually replacing brakes on annual inspections, quite often needlessly IMHO.
Don't get me going on the uselessness of E-testing.  It's all just taxes and bureaucracy.
