Honda Fit - Imported From China
« on: December 21, 2011, 09:03:42 pm »
This was mentioned in another thread I cannot find, so I thought I would post the link here:

Honda Motor Co. has crossed the threshold by exporting the Chinese-made Fit subcompact to Canada, The New York Times reported.

The Japanese automaker's Canadian arm began receiving the Fit from China instead of a Japan factory this month. It's part of a Honda plan to build more vehicles outside of Japan and avoid the punishing effects of the strong yen.

With the change, Honda also aims to wring out more profits in a market segment where margins already are thin.

Yea, I think most of us saw that, and I pointed it out even earlier than the post you couldn't find.  (See post #53 here  http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,76785.msg758403.html#msg758403)  Also see here:  http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,75247.0.html

Why the re-post?  Any reason in particular?

I'd rather not support the Chinese government by purchasing products made there.  If I have a choice, I will not buy a Chinese-made product.

I only posted the link to provide some documentation of the fact. The thread I couldn't find left the impression thanks to some that it was not true. I thought it would be useful for folks to know. No ulterior motives.

Thanks for doing so. This is the first passenger vehicle assembled in China available for sale in Canada. It will be interesting to see how consumers react to this if they even notice (or care).

^X2, but it's getting harder and harder to do.  The Fit was never on my list of possible vehicles so that point is moot, but I'd still not buy a Chinese made car.

Chinese car like chinese food.  Once you have one, you'll be hungry for another one shortly.  :)

The Outback is assembled in Indiana. Talk about 3rd world! :rofl2:

This thread reminds me of something I read that left me shaking my head.

It was in an issue of 'Canadian Geographic', I was reading it at the Orthodontist while waiting for my daughter, it was from earlier this summer, maybe.  I always considered CG a relatively good magazine, with good editing.

The article was about someone out in Alberta or Sask who was big into rare earth mining, I can't remember which mineral, but he talks about growing up in Alberta, watching the train loads of ore going west to be exported to China, and the train loads of Chinese built cars coming back east.

I wasn't aware that 'train loads' of Chinese built cars were coming into Canada even now, much less in the 1980s or 90s.  I was surprised that the editors of CG would let something like that get into print.

Funny, I've never considered a purchase of an American-made car to be an endorsement by the purchaser of American politics.

Well the Chinese are the biggest debt holder of US economy, so financially china owns US. ..
Does that mean all "made in US" = "made in china" ? ;D

I don't think I'd worry about a made in China Fit   except I would insist that the tires were a reputable Euro,Japanese or Korean brand that I had actually heard of.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
