The Ford dealer I bought my Mustang from has the best setup, they have a " Fast Lane Tire & Auto Centre " attached to the dealership, right next door to the Service Department. Prices were right, lots of variety of oils and lubricants (I switched to synthetic on my first change) and if there are warranty issues there is the convenience of those being handled next door on the same trip. The place was fairly busy and was handling all makes, not just Ford (but most were Ford of course).

Other car retailers should do this. Dealers are always crying they need parts and service business to make money. Well here is a simple business in a simple building with some hoists. Call it "All Makes Oil & Filter", or whatever will differentiate it from the dealer.
Sounds like Terrace Ford in Burlington.

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

While the majority of technicians are men, it is the service salespeople that the customers are dealing with. And women make up a large part of the service sales force at both dealers and at quick lube places (at my store, 3 out of 4 service advisors are women).

Cord,
The Ford, Honda and Nissan dealers I go to are all men service advisors and in sales, the only women are in the business office..
This tactict has been going on for 20 years or more. A clever ploy by service Managers to keep the irate customers blowing off steam in the dealership - most men won't yell at a woman when they feel they are being ripped off.

"JohnM must never let his girlfriend go on one of those vacations where they try to sell you a Time Share."

A friend of mine went on one of those free weekends.  I asked him if he was nuts.  He said "John, I've been a manager for 30 years.  I know how to say "No!"."

He bought a time share.

If by "overly-polite sissypants folks" you mean caring, sensitive, socially responsible and highly empathic people, you'd be wrong because I don't know anyone like that.

My friends consist of bikers, ex-cons and stock brokers who eat the slow and weak of the herd for breakfast and then demand a recycling fee before they flush the toilet.

Bridgette and I are probably related.

But even the most jaded and hard-bitten individuals have been taken at least a couple of times and when this happens we have to speak.  These people make a living doing this and that means they are parasites on the community.  The fewer parasites, the healthier the community.

We can't put the big crooks in jail but at least we can cut down on the small time con artist.

Cheers,
John M.

Again..this could have easily been avoided.  "NO THANKS".  I don't buy any of that "she felt intimidated" crap.  I've been to those places and they don't needle you that hard.  The worse I've seen after you say no is "Are you sure?  You car has xxxxKMs and it might help".  That's it.  She's an adult, isn't she?

C'mon man, coach her up.  Tell her that this is an old scam and to just stick to what she's going there for...and that NO THANKS works wonders.

I'd have to go +1 on this.
My wife is like that, she has a problem saying "no, thanks". If it so happens that I can't drop the car off at the dealer's for service and I ask her to do it, I always say "NEVER agree to any additional work on the spot. Get them to call me, I know how to say "no". Works like a charm.

I don't think they're con artists anymore than most businesses.  You just need to learn to say NO.  Pretty simple, IMO.

I once fell asleep at a Tony Robbins "seminar".
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

When it comes to 'up sell', I usually say no twice, and if they still insist, I will just look at them without saying a word, ... end of conversation every time.
