Getting Rid Of The Edge
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:05:53 am »
Well, my Wife has decided that she wants to get rid of the Edge.  While she really likes the Edge, she wants to drive something smaller and more fuel efficient.  The kicker is that it's a lease and we have 34 months left on it.  I plan on listing it on Leasebusters at the start of the new year and see what happens.  The good thing is that we received A plan pricing on the Edge due to my wife's place of employment so our lease payment is a far chunk lower than normal.  The bad thing is since I live in NB I am not sure how much action (if any) that I'll get on Leasebusters.  We'll see I guess.

In the event that someone takes over the lease, my wife will probably be looking at a new Civic, Jetta, or Elantra.  Even though I am not overly fond of the looks of the new Civic, it's a pretty attractive bargain at the moment.

So you're losing your edge....?

Nice car.  Does the Edge not come with an Ecoboost Turbo 4 also?  I'm assuming you have the V6.  Maybe the dealer can swap you the I-4 Turbo and apply some of the new vehicle dealer incentives to help with the transition.

Does she like the new Focus?  How badly screwed would you get if you were to go to the dealer and inquire about returning it and taking a nicely loaded Focus in its place.  From what I understand dealers are always looking for late model low mileage vehicles for their used car lots.

AC, getting into an ecoboost isn't an option as my wife just wants to drive something smaller.  Besides, the I4 really isn't that much more fuel efficient than our 3.5L.

5 Wheel Drive, I haven't checked with the dealership but I'm certain that I'd be taking a huge loss returning it this early.  My wife wanting to get out of the Edge isn't for financial reasons so if we don't find someone to take over the lease it's not really a big deal.  I forgot about the Focus, I'd definitely take a look at that one as well if the time comes.

Yikes - 34 months left on a lease you want to break is not a good place to be.  Early return penalties will likely prove to be prohibitive.  Hopefully the low payment will attractive bait for fishing in the smaller NB pond.

Definitely add the Focus to your list.  Compact sedans / hatches today are just ridiculously nice.  Good luck!

It's not a big deal at all actually.  I like the vehicle and have zero issues keeping it.  If no one takes the lease over and my wife doesn't get into a smaller vehicle, she is okay with that.

Dealers have been paying around $33,000 for 2011 Edge Limited AWDs with average 20000 kms at auction in your neck of the woods. Call the dealer you bought from to get the current payout amount. There are no "penalties" for early termination, but you owe what you owe. Leasebusters or similar is likely your only hope.

How much gas is she burning? Surely it makes more money sense to pay the extra gas costs for the next 34 months then move into something more fuel efficient ...

Have you thought about the new Impreza. Seeing that you live in the Maritimes, I imagine winters can be quite severe sometimes, so the added feature of AWD may be something to consider. I would think the safety factor would outweigh IMHO, the difference in mileage say over a Honda or other RWD vehicle of the same size.

It doesn't hurt to call the dealer and talk about your options. As mentioned, they love having newish, low-mileage vehicles on their used car lots. And they love selling new cars. So you might find a mutually beneficial deal with them if you're willing to move into a Focus.

How long have you had the Edge?

Like Mighty Duck said, call the dealer and ask. They might be very agreable if you want to move from your current Edge into a Focus. For them they get a nice low mileage used car and they have you on the hook for a few more years with a new car payment. Worth a shot.

^^ Dealer doesn't care about anyone being on the hook with payments. The dealer gets paid in full when they sell or lease a new car.

Spending less on fuel is a bonus, but not the reason why she would like something else.  It's her first SUV and she's just more comfortable driving a smaller vehicle is all.  It would of been nice to know that 14 months ago, but no big deal.  I've got what I want in the garage so she is virtually the only one that drives it.  If she's more comfortable driving something the size of a Civic or Jetta than that's what is most important to me.

Yeah, I'll likely consider an Impreza hatchback as well.  AWD is nice to have for sure.

It's a tax write off so no biggie.  Without the A plan pricing we got, I'm sure the payment would of been around the $750 range.  Heck, a lease on a new G is $830 and that's with their interest rate being reduced.  I was looking around on leasebusters today and wow there are some big payments being made by folks.  I saw some that were $2k/mo.
