over the next 3-5 mo i'll have to replace my aging '86 jetta...

to replace it i am looking at a 1996-2000 ranges on vehicles such as
 honda or toyota (or others?)
(preferably a 4 cyl, and stick)
...but are there any good links/reviews out there
for other options too?

yes i'm on a budget so $3-5k (maybe 6k)  is the price point i wish to stick with,
to keep within my budget.

cheers and thanks

I've seen a 2003 Matrix base 5 speed manual with A/C go for as low as $4.995. 212,000km but good condition.

Corollas, can't go wrong. The 2000+ gained VVT-i which improved fuel efficiency but any year Corolla is good, although for a reliable DD I'd stay away from the 2ZZ-GE, prone to oil pump failures which lead to engine failures.

Mazda Proteges are pretty bulletproof, you'll find them for prices better than Corollas. Ignore the advice from the rest of the country that these cars are rust buckets, they hold up pretty well in Vancouver's not so salty winters.

Ford Escort, they have a good engine, I can't remember off the top of my head, but also bulletproof and likely dirt cheap. I'd be wary of earlier Ford Focus although 2003+ may be a safer bet.

Civics, I've owned mid to late 80s Civic but can't comment on the newer ones.

If you wanted to jump up to midsize, you will probably find a Camry in your price range. The 2.2L 5S-FE engine is a great reliable engine, I had one in my 1990 Celica that pulled strong at 320,000km. Not Corolla fuel efficient but still pretty decent.
Current obsession: 2012 VW Passat TDI 6 speed manual

You want to avoid the '03 Matrix/Vibe manuals, and possibly the '04's, as they are known for trouble with a transmission bearing.
