So all else being equal i.e. identical size, different tread pattern is a problem?

In my humble opinion, it's doable, especially if it's temporary.

is it safe?              Yes, within reason.   you have to understand, that it's not the optimal setup.  and, if any normal passenger cars ever reach their limits of adhesion on public roads, it will not behave as predictably as if it had been equipped with all four same tires.
but at sane city road speed, I think it's passable.

I can see there being more of an issue when the replacement tire is much newer than the rest but in my situation the 3 other tires have less than 3k km on them so all 4 (three + replacement) would be of equal traction if one only considers their age and all 4 are high quality all seasons.

you are quite right..  your existing 3 tires are basically NEW...  so adding 1 new tire will not negatively effect anything.  (especially if you rotate tires regularly).

i think your best course of action is to :   let the car sit(unless you ABSOLUTELY have to go somewhere) while you
1. see if the franchise tireshop can get that tire as he promised sometime in the foreseeable future.
2. if date's given, just live with temp tire for a bit.
3. no date, but sometime within couple month for sure?  buy cheapest same size tire and keep it as spare when your new "right" tire show up.
or
3. you are feeling quite full of cash and want to try out a set of winters, just get winters.  and place an order for the right tire.  that way, your 3 tires are kept new, and with that new tire coming in, you will be set for next spring.

how's that?

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

Thanks for the summary.

The car has now sat for a week in the driveway with the 3 originals and the other sized replacement. I will not drive it until I get a replacement tire i.e. best case is the same sized TOYO or next best...which isnt that good is a brand new other tire the exact same size. `

Buying 4 new winters and rims is probably the best option in the long run if the exact TOYO isnt available for an extended period but it is also the most expensive scenario as well.`

The permutations and combinations are many re plans of action but I just find it very frustrating being in this situation at all. Who would have thunk that buying 4 tires 8 weeks ago and now there is (almost) none of these same tires in all of Canada  :o.

have you looked tirerack or 1010? they will ship it to you fairly quick. (and i'm sure tirerack has express shipping as well.)

EDIT, i just checked, tirerack doesn't have that tire.
but 1010tire DOES.  $290 per pop, plus around $40 for shipping and tax.    just FYI.

Yes thanks for the confirmation. I did phone call 1010 and the rep says there are some in stock with ETA the first week of January. Tomorrow is the day that "my" Superior Tire store hopes that its one remaining Toyo of this size arrives from Vancouver to its store in the GTA. If this doesnt happen then I will order from 1010.

Bet you got a great deal!   ;)

I had to replace a single tire a couple of months ago for my then 1-month-old Mazda3 after a blowout on the way down to NYC.  As other posters have noted, a tire with the same overall diameter and other specs (including speed rating) as the OEM one should suffice and would've been OK for me, except I couldn't bear the thought of using a different make/model tire on one corner vs. the other 3.

So when I returned from my trip, I purchased an OEM Yokohama tire to match my other tires, even though the OEM Yokohama's main claim to fame is the fact that it's black, round, and protects the rims from damage.
Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

21Rouge,

If you're totally screwed, let me know.  I'll drive over to the USA and pick one up for you.  Looks like they run ~$160 there.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

That is for sure going way above and beyond the call of duty rr. Thanks for the offer...definitely much less expensive than 1010tires.

As always I would need to check availability across the border and I am not sure where to start. Anyways hopefully I get good news today from my SUPERIOR TIRE.

Wow!  That *is* a nice offer!  Can you pick up a chip for my (wife's) Q5 2.0T while you're there?   :-\

[UPDATE]

The single TOYO 255/65R18 came in late on Thursday. I picked up the car this morning.

My hope was that all the thrown codes were only due to the mismatched tire. So I test drove before paying and all seems fine ie

  • no ABS light
  • no STABILITRACK needs servicing message
  • no Traction control (AWD) warning

So all seems good (I have my fingers crossed). Just in time for the holidays.

Thanks for all your responses.
