R.I.P. SAAB
« on: December 19, 2011, 10:39:30 am »
Several sources this morning have SAAB officially dead in the water.

Thanks to GM for their complete lack of vision and business skill with this manufacturer, SAAB's were once very cool cars.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

I won't believe they are dead until I see the corpse.

They wave been a dead man walking ever since GM bought them.

Agreed that SAAB has been on life support since GM up and killed off the dealer network 20 years ago.

The latest round has GM blocking sale to any Chinese company, citing that they own the rights to all the models. Considering that it's all rehashed GM stuff now, anyone buying SAAB is starting from scratch.

All I am saying is that it's a crying shame...

Even though it was a front wheel drive, the 9000CSE was one of my favorite cars of all time. It was a shame GM took over and killed them by doing the typical GM thing and turning them into just another rental car like the rest of their fleet. I am saddened by the loss of this company, they were very forward thinking when they were actually Saab.

GM has finally killed off Saab it appears, but it seems no one remembers what Saab was/is.  They were a niche division (Saab-Scania) of a large company.  Saab-Scania was not making a profit in the late 80's and Saab (parent company) wanted to offload it.  After GM bought their initial 51%, it took several years for Saab to finally make a profit, which did happen mainly because they were selling the new 'Saab 900' (i.e. Opel Vectra) in the mid-90's.

GM successfully resurrected the company in a financial state....then completely killed it.  It is a strange situation.

Let's be clear though, without GM's money Saab (parent company) would have closed the doors years ago or sold it to someone else.  I hear Mercedes would be a good company to buy out your car company....right Chrysler?

Maybe Saab-Scania would have been better off if it just died in the 90's?

No warranty now? Damn I'd be pissed if I bought a SAAB in the last 2 years.

$10k is probably a safe bet for a new one, 2008+ models apparently do quite well on reliability and owner satisfaction scores.

I'd be scared stiff about parts and service tech availability.

I'm sticking with my current V-Swede until it shows signs of being done with me.

Drive it until it's dead? You can still pay to repair it.

Still, what a Saab story. The new 9-5 is pretty awesome.

Maybe if I had Arthur's skills. Then my concern would be parts availability in the future.

Good luck if you get into an accident with a new 9 5 finding replacement body parts. Its not like finding an aftermarket fender for  a Cobalt or something.

Well, people are atill finding parts for old MG's,Triumph's, 60's muscle cars etc.etc although I agree it could be a PITA if it was your daily driver.

I'd bid $20k for two new loaded 9-5s. One to drive and one as a backup / parts car.

EDIT: maybe $15k.
