Acetylene bottle inside the truck, bad idea
« on: December 18, 2011, 12:27:29 am »

Not sure if this has been posted here yet, saw it on a motorcycle forum

"So my time almost came to an end this morning... im very lucky to be alive.

First of all, GO HUG YOUR WIFE/HUBBY and tell them you love them.

i had an acetylene bottle in my truck, the valve was bumped so slightly and over night the truck filled with the gas. i noticed the smell, and opened the doors to air out the truck. i drove the truck out of the garage to get some more air movement. i went to roll the pass side window down and as soon as i touched the powerwindows. BAM. with me in the truck. i lost all hearing out of my right ear and got a scratch on the back of my head. allthingsconsidering,im alive.

so now ive got the question out to toyota about a 2012 TT. 125 to canada only, 15 in standard. i want a standard...

pictures tell 1000 words.

dont take any minutes or seconds you have for granted... it may be your last...

peace everyone,"

Looks to me as if the structure held up well enough but the body panels did not.    No external signs of fire that I can see and the air bags went off.   Interesting. I would like to see a Toyota engineers report on that.  But maybe this youtube says it all.

It was not a raging fire, hence no melt down and burn evidence.  It was a sudden, short lived release of energy.

Uh, shouldn't a certain anti-Toyota troll be here by now blaming Toyota and gas pedals and sludge and who knows what else?
No place I'd rather be...

I agree. As soon as I saw that video...and that's why the body panels all flew off like that.

As for the troll... good thing it wasn't a Hyundai or a Regal or we'd really be in trouble.  ;D

Does it strike anyone else as less than intelligent to get in and actually drive a vehicle filled with acetylene gas from a leaking cylinder?  ???  The guy's lucky his FJ didn't blow the moment he started it.

For many years I used to borrow a 3 foot tank of Acetylene from the father in law and I hauled it all over the place in my trunk.  It's got a valve.  I suspect on these explosions ppl forgot to use the valve and it leaked out the hose.

Guy might have lost his hearing in one ear permanently.

Moral of the story is when storing gas, leave a window open.  :P

It would be funny to take a pic of it in front of one of the paintless dent removal shops...

Some years ago, a friend of my father got a full bbq propane tank, and put it in the trunk of his car, then he stopped to have lunch with his wife on the way to his cottage.  After lunch, he was smoking his customary cigar, and opened the trunk to get something out....kaboom.  Funeral a few days later.

Valve?  You're supposed to travel with a valve guard, that way it's impossible to bump the valve and cause explosions.  This guy doesn't sound terribly bright, and could have been a candidate for the Darwin Awards.

In front of the old Cy's Seafood in Dieppe? I remember that story. Bad scene.
