2012 Volvo V40
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:03:20 pm »
It looks like its going to look like a baby v60.   Interesting Volvo is going after the hatch market with this instead of maybe a sedan/sportback like the new a3 sedan is going to be.     http://www.worldcarfans.com/111121639090/2012-volvo-v40-teased-for-geneva-debut

I had heard from more than a few sources that the redesigned V50 would not be hitting NA shores as the previous model has been flatlined for a few years already.

Either way, Volvo Canada is unlikely to bring in manual shift versions. That alone will keep me away.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

i think they will bring the new v60 and the v40 as replacements.  the v50 was a little bit of an awkward size.  not practical enough for a lot of people looking for a wagon and too big for a younger urban audience.  i actually checked the v50 out but the a4 avant won over in almost every category for me.

:iagree: Lady leadfoot's SiR is getting to be due and that's what she wants. I'm just biding my time for a nice minty S-Line A4 Avant to come off a lease in the next couple of years so I can snag it for way less than a new one. We throw on 35,000 km's a year, a new one doesn't make much sense when one that's 3 years old looks the same as new.

The S40 and V50 were available with manual until 2011 MY. Now only the C30 is manual, unfortunately.

And here's the v40. Interesting to note this car is only an inch shorter than the old v50 but check out how far back the rear seats are situated.

Looks a lot like the Ford Focus to me. Not that the Focus is a bad looking car, quite the contrary -- it just doesn't quite feel like a volvo to me -- perhaps it's too non-descript.

For 2013 Volvo is adding a pedestrian airbag. Seems like an interesting idea. It won't protect anyone from the initial impact, but it might make the aftermath a lot safer for pedestrians and drivers. I do wonder about the cost of resetting the airbag once it deploys, but that's a small consideration in exchange for better safety for pedestrians...

I wonder about the (admittedly cold) logic from the driver's perspective.

Pros:
Probably less likely to be charged with veh manslaughter and/or sued since the pedestrial is likely to have less serious injuries.

Cons:
Probably quite expensive.

Hard to determine with any precision what the cost/benefit ratio here is.
