Audi Q5 2.0T: Surprisingly Good Fuel Economy
« on: December 13, 2011, 06:55:20 am »
Interesting that on the highway at 120 km/h we average 8.5 l/100 km on the Audi, which is identical to what we get on our Mazda3 Sport GT.  The Audi has an 8-speed electronically controlled transmission, direct injection, and a 2.0 litre turbo 4 cylinder engine, and is pulling around north of 4000 lb.  The Mazda weighs in at about 3000 lb, and has a 6-speed manual and a normally aspirated 2.5 litre 4 banger.

I've never attained this good of fuel economy in a CUV.  The fuel econonmy of the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe 6 cylinder that we had was no where near as good as the Audi.

The relative fuel economy of our two cars is the same at other speeds, too.  7.7 l/100 km for our round trip to Ottawa Senators games on both vehicles.  We've had both cars for 3 months now so I feel confident that these are mostly accurate numbers.
Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

I am sure there is a HYBRID somewhere in the Q5.  :) ;D  Hats off to the German engineers. My brother's X6 with the Turbo 3.0L gets very good fuel mileage as well, way better than our CX-7.

8.5l/100km's in the Q5?  That is impressive for a cuv like the Audi!

Contemporary small displacement DI turbos do very well in highway economy.  My Sonata does way better on the highway than my Altima V6 did, even though both had 6 speeds and made comparable power.

Very nice!  The GLI we just had averaged 9.9 L/100 km, but there was a lot of....uh.....'spirited' driving.  For a near comparison, the Mitsu Lancer Ralliart which also has a 2.0L turbo and 6 speed DCT (and more power) averaged 13.1 L/100 km.  And that was in the early fall  :o

My 6 speed 07 Sentra is only around 8.2!1 That's impressive. The 2.0l T on my 08 GTI was around 8 on the highway so I think that that 2.0 T DI engine is simply quite efficient when its off boost. I'm sure the 8 speed helps. What does the Q5 rev at 120?

The Q5 revs just a bit over 2000 rpm at 120 km/h.

and the A7 3.0 l. revs at just over 1,400 at 120 kms/hr.

Direct Injextion with supercharging gave 9.2 l.s/100 kms. all types driving for 3700 kms
on a recent trip.  But passing 80-120 time is phenominal at 4.3 seconds and a real safety factor when you need it.

The Q5 revs just a bit over 2000 rpm at 120 km/h.

I believe its a case of high torque and low RPMs thanks to the turbo. Higher RPM increases frictional losses all through the driveline all else equal. And running at lower RPM's requires boost.

That motor is probably capable of producing over 190ish lbft at the wheels even at just 2000RPM. Plenty.

The GLK is horrible on fuel at 120km/h. Probably close to 11L/100. Big honking port injected V6 and bad aero.
Everything in life is relative.

GTI revved 2900 at 120. Shows what a difference that gearing can make. Q5 is what 800lbs heavier with worse aerodynamics and more drive line friction? Throw that same 2000 rpm 6th gear into a gti and watch it get 7.5 l per 100km or below.

damn gearing...   my car revs 2700~2800 around that speed. ..  sure would get better economy with taller 6th gear..  from 5th to 6th at that speed, it only drops 500 rpm.

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

I wonder why they didn't gear the 6th taller. Maybe its an oddity with the DSG.

The new Beetle with the turbo 4 has a taller 6th .. Not sure what they were thinking the first time around. Maybe they didn't care as much for fuel economy, it was meant for the GTI anyway.

I dunno, an M3, might have something to do with performance.
