First Drive: 2012 Buick Verano
« on: December 13, 2011, 03:05:03 am »

The all-new Buick Verano is a nice driver and is definitely not a gussied-up Chevy Cruze, reports Jil McIntosh.

I always liked the original and effective rear suspension
quote
Like the turbocharged Cruze, the Verano uses a rear suspension that incorporates a Watt’s link, also called a Z-link and an unusual feature in the segment. It uses a pivoting centre link between the rear axles to keep the back end stabilized on turns or rough roads. I’ve driven the similar set-up in the Cruze on intentionally bad pavement in GM’s test centre, and it does make quite a difference in keeping the car firmly planted no matter what’s under the tires.

I find the styling dreadful. The car is overweight and underwhelming. Epic fail, GM. It won't keep a single buyer out of an import showroom.

I think I'd prefer this to either the Cruze or the Regal (except the GS).  It does suffer from the severe porkitis that inflicts so many GM models, so I'd definitely wait on the upcoming turbo / stick combo.  I'm not exactly sure what the market is for this car, but I like it overall.

This car's competition won't be the premium asian or european brands GM would like it to be but more likely the midsize CamCordAltSonMal et al.

Within GM itself, the '12 'bu with the new 2.5l will be a better alternative for a similar price.

Just like we have a dedicated subforum for people who want to :censor: and moan endlessly about the Canadian / US pricing issue, we should have a dedicated subforum for the no awd diesel manual wagon = fail crowd.  :P

Given the equipment, sound insulation and such, I'm not seeing the weight as being that out of line.

Verano 1500kg
Jetta 2.5 1406kg
Focus SEL sedan 1381kg
Mazda3 GT sedan 1380kg

^^^ so compared to a Mazda 3 GT, it's like driving around with a 265 lb. super-heavy-weight boxer in the passenger seat beside you.  All day.  Every day.  Thatsalottainsulation!  :P

Yup, I don't find either car desirable in any way. As Minou stated, GM is yet again competing with itself.

Very attractive car, I like it a lot, GM have some of the most beautiful designs on the road right now along with Hyundai.

I find both GM and Hyundai cars overstyled and said styling will get old in a hurry. But then again I am an old man who loves to drive Q-ships and always has.
