I concur about a CUV, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 5 year old CR-V, RAV-4, or Forester.  Impreza too.  If they're that age, a huge chunk of depreciation is gone, and it won't lose much more in 2-3 years.  They're deadly reliable.
+1 and I would throw the Escape in as well.
Railton

+2  Don't forget to factor in the cost of some decent tires.  AWD will be of no help to her in in a snowstorm if she's running on near bald no-season rubber.

Jaeger

Absolutely! Whatever she ends up with will have 4 decent tires and a set of good quality winters.
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

FYI, The previous generation Rav4 has full time AWD, whereas the newer ones have slip and grip type.

Make sure whatever you get your daughter has a good emergency first aid kit.  Also a backpack filled with stuff like a survival blanket, flashlight, flares, matches, trail mix, and the like in case she were to get stranded.

PS The CR-V is a great choice.

Just like Bob and his teenage daughter, Hailey. “A cell phone, GPS, blankets, candles, and a can of navy beans. Yes, navy beans.
