Hmmm - take away 6" and there's still plenty of room?  I'll have to check the dimensions - din't realize this thing had limo space for the rear passengers.  BTW - what's a good site for comparing interior and exterior dimensions of a couple cars, side-by-side?

Jaeger

Seriously, I set the driver seat for my 6'-1" self, then sat behind myself. There was so much room I tried to move my feet forward to touch the driver seat (feet still touching the ground) and I could barely do it with a bit of stretching. That's why I figured maybe the Passat has too much rear legroom. The footrests in the Sienna XLE would feel at home in this car.

If the Golf is tight on rear seating, as some posters are suggesting, and the Passat is a limo, where does the new Jetta fit in the overall scheme of things?

I found it weird, the Rabbit felt like a midsize car comfort wise, the Golf wagon was tiny in the back.

The Jetta I stepped into as well, with the driver seat set for myself, I had about 3 inches in front of my knees in the back, it was very comfortable. The Jetta would be more than enough car for me.

Golf = compact, Jetta = midsize, Passat = gigantor.

Same here. If there is much of a differential side to side, it isn't that obvious. It does mean the fan is running at a higher speed too which can be annoying.

Automatic climate control I could live without too. They never seem to direct enough air at the windshield on their own, so they end up partially overridden. Most don't circulate any air until the engine has some heat, then go full bore, so I end up overriding that too. Not much automatic at that point.

I found my sister's BMW X5 auto climate control setting to be equally as finicky. My Mazda 5 has been set and forget. In colder temperatures, it automatically directs air onto the windshield to keep it clear, it's when it's 8-15C and raining that I have to manually turn on the defogger.

Actually I would've preferred VW's old climatic system, it's an automatic climate control system but with manual fan speed and vent mode controls. The 2nd gen Smart cars I drive often have the same system and it works really well. 2nd gen Acura ELs had this too.

But I doubt there is a different "climate" in your car as between the driver's right shoulder and the front passenger's left shoulder.  ;)

Jaeger

I once had a VW bug that had 2 different climate zones. The gas heater would scorch your right kneecap while you were trying to scrape the frost from the inside of the windshield.  :)

Goldilocks and the 3 Volkswagens.  :)

The Merc always has the fan blowing too fast. Hugely irritating. Software was designed by monkies.

Interesting.  The single zone system in our old C230 was really good, better even than the dual zone in the E300.  Maybe simpler is better?

I think its just a stupid software parameter that was poorly chosen. It heats and cools just fine with less fan speed.

Maybe too it is exacerbated by the quietness of the rest of the car.
Everything in life is relative.

Just read the May issue of C&D

Passat 2.5 finished 1st in the comparo beating out the competition by a very wide margin.  What was surprising is that it got better fuel mileage than Sonata and Optima. (both N/A versions).

Passat
Accord
Optima
Sonata
Camry
Malibu

Was the order they placed.

The 1 and 2 spots are hardly surprising.  C/D is in love with the Accord and in love with anything German.  The only real question was how spots 3-6 would shake out.  That said, the Passat seems to be better universally received than the Jetta.  I'd like to check one out for myself one day.

i've been in a new Passat, but not driven one...i liked what i saw when i was inside...sadly, the lack of decent finance rates pushed it way out of my budget, but if i was in the market for a large sedan and perhaps was going to pay cash (or very short term finance), it would definitely be on my list...my only "gripe" is they don't use the turbo 4 that is in pretty much everything else...it just seems like it would be such a nice fit for this car.

It is coming.  The new 1.8T is replacing the 2.5 very soon.

The review said that Optima is sportier than Sonata and its seats are best in class.  It just needed ride/handling sorted out and it would be top of class.

Yeah - I read that - yet the Sonata edged the Optima in pretty much every measured performance test.  Go figure.
