Bike vs Car
« on: December 02, 2011, 04:00:00 pm »
I bought a Garmin bike GPS computer in the fall and have been testing it every way I can. Its passed all my test even though there are some flaws but I can live with those for all the good things it will do.

I decided that next time I had to drive downtown in the morning I would track my drive and compare it to my bike commute although I take different routes for each method.

Even though my bike commute is 5kms longer it takes only 2 more minutes. Better yet, my average speed on the bike was 25.0kph (27.0kph moving) vs the car at 19.0kph (26.4 moving). I'm sure the 9 minutes (28% of the total drive time  :o) of sitting still in the car traffic had a lot to do with that and I have an easy drive through downtown.

Next time I do it I'll have to add my heart rate monitor to see how worked up I get stuck in traffic.

Most of them  :P

I do stop for red lights but I don't put my foot down at stop signs unless there is other traffic or I'll track stand if I'm feeling well balanced. I will ride in the middle of the lane when doing the speed limit to prevent cars from buzzing me to squeeze by to get to the next red light/stop sign.

Hell car drivers don't stop at stop signs either...probably because they're too busy texting.

I take boring vehicles to work because when there is endless traffic and the streets are packed, its only an exercise in frustration. The bikes and P-car get taken on country back roads. I remember the time I was two lanes over from an F-40 on the Long Island Expressway...5 feet forward, stop, repeat a million times...must have been exciting for him.

What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Aw man, you beat me to it!!  I was going to say of course you can get to work faster on a bike when you run stoplights/stop signs, lane split, etc... :rofl2:
