New winter beater - 1989 Nissan Micra
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:56:46 pm »
I just bought this 1989 Nissan Micra. It isn't pretty but is a 5spd should be much more fun to drive than the nasty automatic Corolla I couldn't bear to drive. This one is insured, registered and I'm driving it so committed. These were sold in Canada but not the US and are getting a bit rare here. The Canadian ones were a bit unique having the sealed beam headlights and offered only the 1.2L engine with either a 5spd manual or automatic.

It was pulled behind a RV in a previous life so the hood is missing a lot of paint.

Not sure what my eventual plans are for it but short term I'm going use it as my winter beater. The tires are shot on it and are only 12" in size. Came with three good 12" tires but I have no idea where I'd find a fourth. The spare is less tall. So bought some 13" Honda Civic rims with winters tires.

This thing is light and has the the thinnest sheet metal I've ever seen. Wikipedia says 1,490 lb.

as bought

1.2L and 56hp! Engine is a tiny, all aluminum four cylinder with a carb on it. Rather similar in size to the Suzuki Swift engine.

The dirty interior. I haven't got a chance to clean it yet but it is high on the priority list. Believe it or not those seats covers were thrown in for free :)

Strictly a four seater with only four seat belts. Quite narrow so probably no room for a fifth. I can lean over an unlock the passenger door with our leaning. I took my boys for a quick ride in it and the middle one asked "why is your car so small?"  :rofl2: No carpets here - just rubber mat interior. Happily I found about $2.12 in the car so I've reduced my purchase price by over one percent!

with the "big" Civic rims. Now just to sort that wonky bumper ...

She needs a good buff but nothing a few litres of Amour All won't fix! I miss cars that were light...with the right tires (thin) this thing will be great in the snow!

My dad owned a late 80s Micra briefly in 1995 or 1996.  He liked bombing around town and back road with it due to the 5 spd and lightness.  Enjoy!

Those were some of the nastiest cars I've ever driven. Some say light..I say flimsy. The noise oh the noise. But as a winter beater..perfect because the car feels like it deserves to be beaten but will keep on going. No need for traction control. With 56 hp and snow tires it probably won't spin the wheels much anyways.

Since they are small it easy to clean the snow off them.  ;D

Yup. My 1993 Tercel had 155/85R13s and weighed a tad less than 1000kg. Likely the best fwd car I've used in snow.

It is definitely flimsy! Hood is made off the thinnest metal ever. Hard to tell if the doors are totally shut, etc. But it is quite fun to drive since you drive flat out all the time.

I've got new neighbors so they don't know what they are in for.  ;D

Congrats.  I used to have a Sentra of the same era.  Very light and skinny tires.  Great in snow.   No side impact beams in the doors if I recall.

Wonder if the upsized tires are going to hurt acceleration? :)

Very nice!

Do you do this as a hobby? Just buy old POS cars, drive them for a few months, sell and get another?

What's the little box with wires coming out of the dash, driver's left?
No place I'd rather be...

Not unless they make it go in reverse. Can't get any slower.

Not sure what the box is. Might be some primitive alarm. The tires are 4% bigger than the stock ones. Acceleration doesn't seem too affected. The speedo will be off just slightly of course.

I sold the Corolla. I really just didn't like driving it. Mostly fixed up but the exhaust flex joint was going to something like $100.

I passed my driving test in one of those cars back in England. Great for learning on - not sure if I would willingly drive one everyday.
