Right...lets get back to important discussions.......

Like whether a Regal is a "sports sedan" and better than a Sonata  ;D
Depends on whether it has "european-tuned suspension" of course.  :run:
Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

Rolled the numbers myself a few years ago when I bought my Volvo.

The math didn't make sense to buy lesser of a car.

TDi's are GROSSLY overpriced. Don't even try to tell me that it costs almost $3000 more to design/tool/set up/build the TDI engine than it costs for the 5 cyl motor, and that's a reduction in difference from when I looked at them 6 years ago. Back then it was almost $5000 more for less car as VW used to take features and options OUT on the TDI's.

$3000 buys a lot of gas, it's all perceived value on the purchase of the vehicle.

Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

It may not cost $3000 more to make the TDI versus the 2.5L, but they also sell less TDI's than 2.5L engines so the economy of scale is different, and they also have to certify the TDI engine for Canada/North America, which can't be cheap. Besides, an extra $3000 is nothing compared to the premiums charged for turbos in BMW's, etc.

3k seems high when benz only charges $1500 premium for the diesel in the ML (a much higher priced vehicle)
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

Or... you could say that M-B overcharges for the gas-powered ML...  ;)

To be fair, the Golf Comfortline TDI comes with a few extra features on top of the 2.5L Comfortline, like some chrome trim bits on the interior/exterior and fog lights, maybe $500 worth if you were to check them off as individual options.

I would like to take  Alberta diesel shortages for $200 Alex.  It would suck to have the TDI in the garage or the side of the road with no stinky fuel around..

There has been some unplanned refinery shutdowns etc. Tight balance between supply/demand. Seems to be easing right now.

To be even more fair, the current price difference between these two is $2400, not $3000. Besides the extra bits that you've mentioned, you also get a 6M tranny vs. 5M, or DSG instead of Tiptronic on the 2 pedal versions. I imagine that the turbocharger adds a bit of cost to the TDI. If the TDI is overpriced, than so is the 2.5. The 2.5 has been around long enough that the development and tooling must be paid for.
