Let's wait and see how much we get hosed on CDN pricing...and how much the rebate will be.

Alberta rebate = $0.00

Toyota Canada rapage on the Prius: 20%.

I wonder about home charging infrastructure.  Nissan has a scam going where they charge (punny!) you $6K for it.
No place I'd rather be...

Won't matter for the first year.  Rebate will be a set of mats.

No need.  It charges on a standard 110V house plug in ~3 hours.

I meant the Ontario Plug-In rebate/credit.

For year 2012?, I dunno.  Current rebates expire March 31, 2012.  ::)  Considering how broke the Province is it should be ZERO.  I believe currently there is $5K, but that is subject to total cap.  Who knows when that will be reached.  In other words, there is this fund and when it's gone, it's gone.  After March 31, 2012 it could be gone.

As mentioned the stock 120 volt set up just plugs in to normal outlet.

The 240 volt system is purchased thru Leviton.  Their unit plugs into any normal RV style 240 volt outlet.  I'd guess it's $500.

I have a mixed feeling about this one. On the one hand it is a sure (although late) evolutionary step for Toyota but on the other, all they pretty much did to the established Prius architecture is replaced the chemistry of one tiny battery with another, added 6 grand to the sticker and called it a day.  I, among perhaps plenty of folks don't see when, if ever such a mark up will pay for itself in gas savings and that's a shame because otherwise Toyota could be very successful in finding ppl who are fed up with the current gas prices, want to stick it to the big oil and don't mind helping the Earth. Oh well, I hope there will be good tax intensives somewhere in the US to sell more than a few dozen of these...

There are plenty of affluent greenies in California alone to soak up what Toyota can manufacture.

The other thing about EVs is the get the premo parking spots.  :)

For RR and other technically inclined among us:
http://gm-volt.com/2012/04/13/cost-per-mile-comparison-2012-volt-vs-2013-prius-plug-in/

Are we talking 3 year leasing or long term ownership  ???

The Volt is an experimental vehicle.  The only way GM can move these units is by offering a ultra ridiculously low 3 year, low mileage, lease with bumper to bumper coverage.

To access the battery in a Volt, 600 parts need to be removed not excluding the seats and doors.

As you pointed out the Prius Plugin is a Prius with a different battery.  The Prius has been Toyota's most reliable car.  The Prius Plugin is not an experiment.

I think fuel consumption comparisons are irrelevant between these two cars because it will be insignificant when the long term cost of ownership is factored in.

If you want to compare a current low mileage 3 year lease, the Volt bests the Prius regardless of running costs providing you can wait 10 hours for a recharge.

The cost premium makes the Plug-In Prius too expensive.

IIRC though..the Prius can re-charge the "EV only" portion of the battery as you drive it though, no?
