I drove 4x4 pickups for over 20 years, all work related in the forest industry in BC.
Sometimes I miss them, especially in the fall and spring when it comes time to clean out the accumulated yard debris. Solution: rent a truck twice a year, cheaper than owning one by a long shot.
When I switched, the first non-truck was a Jeep Grand Cherokee (gotta have that 4x4!) and still work related. Definitely down-sizing, but a whole lot cheaper to operate. The only problem was that the S.O. now wanted to drive it, whereas she did not like driving a full-sized supercab 4x4. When Chrysler quality caught up to the Jeep, I switched to a Subaru Legacy. Wow! What a winter-road-killer that was. The first thing I noticed about the Subby was how it handled in the corners compared to a pick-up. Lower stance and a lot less body sway. And the quality? Miles above the Jeep and the Ford pick-ups.
I can't really compare the pick-ups and the Jeep to the Subaru long-term, because they were all leased vehicles. Get rid of them at 100,000 km and get another, but I've bought out the lease on the Subaru and it's now at 215,000 kms and going strong.
As for missing the pick-ups? Nay, not a chance. I'm too fiscally minded and unless you're using that truck as a real truck should be used, then it's a huge waste of hard-earned money.
