Renting Cars around the holidays

Has anyone noticed besides me that rental car companies jack their rates around the Christmas Holidays?
Renting a full size car for a week normally would costs ~$150 to ~250/wk with a special ends up around twice that easy the week of Christmas.
Normally I wait for the last minute deals but I'm not sure if there are any around the Christmas week.
Have tried all the typical web sites like Expedia, Hotwire, etc. The cut off for deals seems to be Dec 20 then all hell breaks loose for a two week period.
Any ideas?

  ALL businesses do this..the obverse of supply and demand....they can fill every seat...rente every room...empty the lot of rentals...BUT GREED sets in and instead of lowering or maintaining prices they GOUGE yer eyes out...oops here comes another Hurricane...matches matches    $5 bucks EACH mentality.............it's actually CORPORATE LOOTING....that's why i avoid mega Holidays....having said that golfing buddies and me are Hilton Head bound on "Black FRIDAY"..so we will have one expensive "MOTEL $99" nite en route...... :'(...maybe we just stay up all nite at a CASINO/gentleman's KLUB :) en route...and really BUST tha BUDGET....HILTON HEAD or BUSTIERS...........

Have reserved a Camaro Rag Top on my Avis corporate card for $450 for the week or until something better comes along. ;D
Will be interesting to compare the v6 with the G37 although a slush-box. :P

You're surprised? It's supply and demand. Same reason movies cost less on Tuesdays and flying costs more at the most convenient times.

Of course, that doesn't mean you have to like it. :)
