Update....

Just got a return call from someone at TR customer service. They offered  $100 refund on my credit card to offset the cost of having the tires dismounted and the TPMS sensors removed so I could return them for refund. I take back all the nasty things I was thinking. ;)

That's more in line with my experience with them.  One positive aspect of the advent of search engines & websites like this...companies realize that stories of poor (and occasionally exceptional) customer service will be disseminated widely.  It's in their best interest to satisfy the customer!

Nice!

I'm glad (but not too surprised) to hear that they stepped up.

It always amazes me how good the customer service is in the States.

I know what you mean. That's why I was surprised when the first person I spoke with kind of blew me off. In my experience Canadian retailers could learn a lot about customer service from their US counterparts.

TR has been fantastic to us.  We buy all of our tires from them.

I bought the tires for the Mazda3 and the tires+rims for the Q5 from 1010tires.com.  How come no one's mentioned them as an alternative to tirerack?  They are, after all, both Canadian *and* the sponsors of this forum.

....Though I haven't heard much from them lately.   ???

I always check the 1010 site, but haven't bought anything from them, as their prices are always higher than other sources.
No place I'd rather be...

I'll have to post the exact $$ when I get home from my current trip (in TO) but I got a pretty reasonable deal and I did cross-shop both tirerack and Discount Tire.

- Mazda3, Conti WinterExtremeContact qty 4 $760 all taxes in, size 205/50-17
- Q5, Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 qty 4 w/ alloy rims $1800 all taxes in, size 235/65-17

Another issue I had with them, was several selections of winter tires were "sold out" when I tried ordering them late in the year.  No such problems with TireRack.

I've given up checking with them. I find their website to be poorly designed/hard to use and their selection limited compared to TR. As to price,as long as you live close to the border and can avoid high UPS charges and duty TR seems to run 30-40% cheaper.

Edit...

I just went to their site and checked on packages for the BMW. pricing was great ...for alloy rims and 4 winters they were showing 975-1100!. Then you checked further (they didn't specify tire brand in results, just pictures of rims). The winter tires they recommend for a 2011 328iX turn out to be something called..............

I wonder how important a smooth, no bump ride is for winter tires?

I have to think the 1010tires sponsership thing must be history. None of the mods from 1010tires show as having been active since Nov 2010. Anyone know for sure?

That would make two former sponsers then (TT and 1010). Perhaps tirerack will sponser next...

Might be a good idea because I'm a bit tired (no pun intended!) of sponsors becoming absentee landlords here.  They come in with the best of intentions, post a few replies and then they're gone.

Tirerack?  Bring 'em on!  I don't know how wing would feel about a poll/petition on the idea.......

I would assume there is not enough traffic for a sponser..

They could be creative....giveaways to top posters, interesting polls, links to FAQs, etc., in order to bring up the post count.  You're right, though, it's a vicious circle.  If no one posts, then there's nothing to reply to and the sponsors are soon AWOL.

In the absence of a sponsor, I think someone like capriracer should be approached to be the forum mod.

Either that or they got tired of hearing people (me included) discussing how expensive CDN tire pricing is and how Tirerack is so much cheaper. ;D
