Holy Mackinaw!
« on: November 01, 2011, 05:42:11 pm »
Just got back from a good fall bike ride.  I am now covered in sweat and shaking with anger/adrenaline.  Some mouth-breathing teenager in the oncoming lane on the county road I was cycling on pulled out to pass a dump truck which was pulling a trailer with a back hoe on it.  Only problem was that I was already in the lane.  Do you think the $hit-for-brains idi0t would pull back in when he saw me?  Nope.  Just kept on coming.  I had to take to the shoulder because not only was he coming right at me, but there was very little time to react and he was practically on the shoulder of the road himself in his lame-brained rush to get around the truck/trailer.

It was light out (about 4 pm), the sun wasn't in his eyes (it's a north/south road) and it was a straight stretch.  No excuses.

Don't even ask me if I got his license plate number.  It happened too fast which is a relative term given the fact that he was driving a Hyundai Accent.

Maybe you need to stop riding bikes and do something very safe and quiet like pottery to keep your adrenal glands intact.   ;D

Let me forewarn you....this won't be the last time some jackhole cuts you off or almost runs you over.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I don't quite understand... you were cycling in the roadway and had to move to the shoulder for oncoming traffic?

Shouldn't you have just been riding on the shoulder in the first place?

Don't try and tell a cyclist this.  They will go on to tell you that they have as much right to the road as anyone else.  It's futile.  Don't bother.

Still a rather ill-advised stunt from Mr. Accent.

Seriously?  You must have wide paved shoulders everywhere in AB.  I'm not riding for 20 km on  gravel shoulder!

Okay, gotcha. I don't think I've ever seen a gravel shoulder around here. The roads are either all paved or all gravel.

Frankly, I won't ride on a road that doesn't have a good shoulder. Too many idiots out there, but I guess I don't need to tell you that.

I had something like this happen to me mid summer. I was riding down the opposite side of March rd and some chick decided to pass a dump truck on the double yellow line. When she noticed me she smiled and shrugged her shoulders as I hit the gravel shoulder in panic. I'm not a fan of riding down march road but my route only requires about 1/2 a km of it.
I don't care if you like cyclist or not, the rule is they are a vehicle on the road and you have to yelled to them.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

You would not enjoy the three lane (one each way and center passing lane) in Poland. Essentially every pass turned into a game of chicken.

Yes that would make more sense there.
