Toolatecrew's New ride AKA "The Toaster"
« on: October 31, 2011, 08:39:14 am »
After getting rid of the GTI I thought we might try to get by with just the 99 Maxima as are only car for a bit maybe even through the winter. That lasted an entire week of trying to juggle work trips (to short to rent) kids Jazz dance Basketball swimming, wife's social life etc.

So I set a budget of maximum 9 K tax in and a minimum of 07 with less than 100K, air cruise and manual and went to work. The result:

2007 Sentra 2.0 S 6 Speed Coveinience pAckage (Air Cruise 16 inch wheels)with 89000 KM.
It was an off lease car purchased by a dealer/bodyshop client. They also do Nissan mechanical service so mechanically it was well checked and cared for. All checks on accidents etc came back clean.
There is some obvious wear on the interior from an elbow rubbing the door panel or by the shifter but mechanically the car is very good. I was also able to get new winters at a very reasonable price with the deal.

Car isn't perfect for for an 07 its very good. One slight scratch on the trunk that would buff out. A couple minor little paint chips here and there.

Since this is going to be the primary car until we finally retire the Maxima in the spring it does meet my minimum criteria for long work trips. At cruise in 6th at 120 its right around 3K but quieter than the GTI for sure. The cruise holds speed and I expect with the 2.0 it will be reasonable on gas. The seating position is fairly high which my 5 foot tall wife loves. There is a surprising amount of room in the back for the kids and the trunk is very decent sized.

Its no GTI though. Engine makes lots of noise but not much thrust. Shifter is video game like and although I haven't missed a gear 6th is tricky. Suspension rides like a bigger car but its tippy on corners and understeer is always lurking. Thus I have dubbed it "the Toaster" and my kids have picked up on it. Its grey, nondescipt and its what I term an "appliance". Hopefully it will do its job and not break for many years.

An old neighbor of mine works at a local Nissan dealer.  Looks-wise, he referred to these as mini-Maxima's when they first came out.  Enjoy....

Congratulations.....!

My 2009 hasn't been trouble free (minor issues), but it's fun to drive and comfortable, and easy to find in a parking lot compared to all the Corollas and Civics.

Curious has you 09 had issues with engine and transmission. From what I read the 2.0 manual has far less issues than the 2.5 and the CVT

Is this the one from your co-worker? Looked like it was in pretty decent shape, but what can you tell by pics on the internet.  Hope it treats you well, and at least with the stick, you can have some fun too!
Yeah its from a "client". Given our relationship and the services I provide I'm inclined to think he would not hide anything from it. It was a lease return so its hard to say how well it was really cared for but cosmetically it does look pretty good.

Congrats 2latecrew!  It's hard to find an inexpensive, dependable car that's got some creature comforts.

I hope she is very problem free and will allow you more flexibility and choice with the money you are saving.

This is so true. I really would have preferred a Mazda 3 as they are much more fun but people want silly money I find. Same with Civics. The 6-8 K range is not a sweet spot. We did limit ourselves by going dtictly manual but no way would I get a car of this type with a CVT I'd go insane.

Nothing mechanically wrong....the engine and tranny are fine 35,000kms in although the 07-08 2.5/CVT wad some issues.  Brakes are even wearing slower than usual, still lots of pad left at a recent service (every other car I've leased typcially needs new pads by now).

Mostly squeeks and groans from various parts that seem to have missed another 1/4 turn to torque them down and the drivers side door that rattled that are disappointing. But I had the well-known groaning gasket rear suspension issues on the Mazda 5 I had, minor surface rust appearing on the MPV, my Saturn Ion was in the shop for warrantee repairs 18 times in the first 24 months before CAMVAP resolved it....

I've just about given up on any new car being flawless...just more 'how big a deal is it REALLY', and I compare it to the Ion.  ;)

Unless of course it is the 2012 TOYOTA YARIS - yes, you can still get brand-new 2002 technology in 2012, without it being a barn-find!   :rofl2:

Sad to hear you let the GTI go. That said, the Sentra looks like a comfotable, efficient, and inexpensive ride until you decide to take the plunge again in a year or so. I certainly understand you comment on the higher ride height. Ms Flinters SX4 has a similar high roof/seating position that's great for the vertically challenged. Of course the trade off is the higher CG and more body motion.

I also understand your comments re. pricing on used Mazda 3 and Civics. One would expect that given the volumes they sell, it would be relatively easy to find a  good example in the 6-8K range. No such luck.

In any event, I hope the new Toaster treats you well. :)

That's a very good buy. Sub $9K for an econo box, 2007 with air and less than 100K.
