We beat the crap out of a modded 03 Neon (sx2.0) R/T (manual) at the track on a regular basis and it keeps coming back for more.
I think they had sorted out most issues after the redesign.

I had a 2000 Neon as well which was a fantastic car as well. Never had any issues with it. Owned for five years or so and only a window switch needed to be replaced.

So depending on your perspective it took Chrysler 6 or 9 years to sort out all of the issues; I'd call that pathetic by any standard.

I spent 8 weeks in a Chrysler showroom back in '94 when Neon's came out and those cars were 'effing awful. Everything broke, there was no rhyme or reason to it. I was present at various dealerships and manufacturers for no less than 30 new model introductions over my 8 years selling cars and never did I see a car so consistently plagued with problems. The only way to explain it is poor design prematurely gunshot to the market combined with the average to shoddy Chrysler build quality of the day.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.

The point is, IMO you don't need to own a vehicle for years on end for it prove to be reliable/unreliable.    :)

Sure, if you are looking at the short term. But then, many cars would or might look reliable in the short term. But if you only keep a car short term and its reliable, then you are a happy camper.

Its tougher to label a car reliable if you own it long term since you bought it new. A car that has been trouble-free for 12 years since new is certainly a better car than one that has been trouble-free for 4 years since new...the latter hasn't proven itself long term yet...it might be or it might not be reliable.

I also do not put much stock in owner reports when they bought their car used and then complain that it is a POS. Who knows how it was maintained, looked after or driven. I can take the best car and turn it into garbage in a week.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

I've had some really, really bad cars in my day, but it's no contest which was the worst. The winner by a country mile is:

 The 1989 Ford Tempo

Ha ha ha! I had to laugh out loud because my family has owned like 3 Ford Tempos. They were all terrible but my folks kept buying them. I saw one on the road the other day, it's been like a year since I've seen one moving. I learned to drive in a Tempo!

Worst: toss-up between:
'77 Plymouth Fury, tranny went immediatly following the warranty, paint was flaking and fading and numerous gadgets inside were falling off;
'95 Grand Cherokee, rear-end went just before warranty did, wiring harness on drivers side went just after warranty went;
'98 Dodge Dakota, paint started flaking in the box 2 years after purchase, tranny had a strange whine/howl that dealer could not identify.
Notice a pattern here! ::)

Best: toss-up between:
'71 Datsun 510, nothing went wrong for over 80,000 miles, until a friend took it on a one-way drive and a tow truck brought it home.  Most fun car I ever drove, shocked many a Big Three car as to it's jump off the line and handling.  A great chick-magnet.
'72 Datsun 240Z, almost as much fun as the 510, but better (fantastic) handling, blew many a European and N. A. sports cars away in the twisties.  In fact I never could find another car that could beat it.
An even better chick-magnet then the 510, though it was awkward getting more than two chicks in it! ;)
Surprisingly I had very few maintenance issues with it and it was totalled before the frame started to rust! :o

But, coming up fast in the rear-view mirror:
'08 Honda Fit, over 60,000 km and the car hasn't even burped or farted.  Definitely not a "fun" car, but so far damn reliable.
If god didn't want us to eat baby animals, he wouldn't have made them so tastey.

Best:

2004 Mistsubishi Lancer Ralliart - Pretty quick for what it was, 2.4 NA 4 banger which the previous owner had installed a few bolt-ons. Very reliable, and comfortable and I regret selling it. Paying for school got in the way.

1991 VW Golf Diesel - Okay, okay, lots of VW hate here but the upside to this one was the absolute lack of wiring. Now it only had about 50hp (but 95lbsft of torque) but it just ploughed through deep snow.. I took the front bumper off and never, ever got stuck. Fuel economy was excellent and if anything broke, it could be fixed with a wrench and a hammer.

Worst:

1998 VW Golf - I will say that when it ran right, it was a great little car but it absolutely disintegrated over the course of one winter. A whopping 65,000km on it and it was finished. All sorts of electrical gremlins, ignition lock broke, transmission was on its way out. Clutch was on its way out, etc etc etc.

I guess I'll see how the 2010 Colorado works out, so far so good *knocks on wood*

Worst - but my favourite so far - 1993 Volvo 850 GLT.  I bought it used in 2002.  It had about 160,000km on it, and was in really great shape, and pretty much ran without any major issues until one fateful day when, about a week after having invested roughly $1000 in brakes, suspension, and a few other repairs, a short circuit somewhere behind the instrument panel resulted in a total meltdown of the electrical system.  Would have cost thousands to repair, so I scrapped the car for $1000...  Broke my heart.

Best - while the Aerio has been trouble free, I'd have to give the crown to the 2002 Renault Clio I currently drive.  For an eight year old car that cost me 3000 Euros, it has never let me down, has great fuel economy, and is a blast to drive - it's essentially built like a BMW Mini Cooper, and handles like a go-kart - a great city car.  Mine only has the 75hp 1.2 16v engine, but the engine has lots of low end grunt.  It's an amazing little city car, especially with its sequential semi-automatic gearbox - full auto mode for in town, semi-auto mode for the open road.  I can see why the Top Gear boys have loved various generations of hot Clios...

Worst:
1991 Mazda Protege 5 speed
-One day, the car was crawling along at 5mph -in neutral!!!
-Lots of frost would form on the windshield - on the inside...
-Electrical problems galore
Got rid of it within the year

Best:
2005 Hyundai Tucson V6 FWD
-Only scheduled maintenance for 7yrs, did replace inexpensive bushings twice though.
