Public Service Announcement -- When to put on your winter tires
« on: October 29, 2011, 10:36:27 am »
All-season tires typically do not provide effective grip at temperatures below 6 degrees Celsius.  A good rule of thumb (per our own "vdk") is to mount your winter tires on your car when the weather forecast indicates that the average daytime high for 5 or more consecutive days will be less than or equal to 6 degrees C.  Of course, some jurisdictions like Quebec mandate mounting tires by a certain calendar date, but a prudent driver will do so earlier.

I just mounted my winter tires on my Mazda3 (the ones for the Q5 are on order from 1010tires).  I typically mount them around Hallowe'en so this worked out well.

Heading outside to put the DM-V1s on the truck this morning, and maybe the WS-70s on the Touring if my wife gets back from the barn with enough daylight left.  High of about 5 degrees today in S'toon - I always hate changing tires when the temperature is at freezing, or it's really windy outside.  Damn my lack of heated garage!

Mine typically go on around mid November.  I don't like leaving it any later than that as I don't want to be caught without them in inclement weather.  Heck, we are forecasted to get a little snow tonight and tomorrow morning.   :-\

Mine went on last Tuesday.   When I see the long range forecast getting near to 7 deg for daytime highs on they go.

Can't wait to drive on the new Blizzak WS70's that I bought last spring.    Forecast in Ottawa shows next week highs of 14C and wet snow the week after with highs around 6C.

Woo hoo! Winter is only a week or two away!  ;D ;D ;D

I've lost traction at full throttle in 3rd gear and half throttle in 2nd gear with the cold dry roads. Will have to make some time to switch them over soon. Will also have to find new summer for next year, these will be toast when I take them off.

No need to be rude.  If you know when to change over your tires good for you.

Besides I can't possibly be a nanny w/o a sex change.

The vexing part of all this is the vast majority don't install snows in Ontario.  Politically, mandatory snows are a no go.   The massive move to FWD has, in the winter, made driving on Ontario rural roads and highways dangerous in contrast to the old days (rwd).

I don't remember the (good) ol' days myself, but the few times that I have driven RWD in low friction conditions it's scared the h3ll out of me.  I guess it gives you a higher respect for road conditions when you can actually feel what the car's doing.  Problem with FWD is when you lose traction you've also lost your steering.   :(

The new set of Michelin Latitude X-Ice 2's went on the wifes Odyssey today.   I'll likely switch over the TL to winter boots next weekend.
Typically, I swap them the first weekend in November.

Not to nitpick too much but the last time I checked, the key temperature was 7 degrees Celsius. ;)

I've already scheduled my tire swap for this coming Friday (Nov. 4).  The average temp will be around 8 degrees, with the usual swings above and below.  I could have waited a week or two longer but then I would have hit the mass of people who just love to wait until the last minute.  The law has a deadline of December 15th.

On November 3 the Toyo Observe G02 + tires will go on the Pontiac (will be winterized as well at the mechanic). November 4 the new winters for the Impreza will arrive and will be installed. The car has already been checked at the mechanic. We bought Good Year Ultra Grip Ice WRT for the Impreza. It was $1,140 with 4 rims out the door.

I don't think it's covered by OHIP, so you'll have to do better than that.
