New addition to the family
« on: October 26, 2011, 10:05:15 am »
Well, it's not only Tortoise and Keh-vin who have been car shopping lately.  Mrs. 5 Wheel Drive and I decided that we just can't get by with ony 1 car anymore.  Our little guy has too many dr and physio appointments these days.  It's fine during the summer when I'm on the bike, but with that going away for the winter soon, it was time to start looking.

I knew I wanted either a Civic or a Mazda 3.  The more I looked, the more I was leaning towards the Mazda.  I did lots of reading.  The updated '07 3 included a mild face lift, abs, side seat, side curtain air bags, and an aux in for the stereo.  So the search was on for a nice clean '07 or newer.

Last night I took delivery of a 5 speed (of course) Sunlight Silver '07 GS Sport.  It looked like it was in great shape inside and out.  There's barely any scratches or marks on it.  No rust.  Car Fax was clean.  It has just over 60,000km's on it.  The original in service date was Sept 17, '07.  So I have another 30,000km's or until Sept 17, '12 for Mazda power train warranty.  The previous owner also had the windows tinted, added the hood protector, and upgraded the stereo with the Mazda in-dast 6 cd/mp3 player.

Some of the ones I looked at were not in the greatest of shape.  First of all you'd think the Mazda only ever made them in grey.  Some stunk of cigarette smoke, others were covered in scratches and dings.  These were generally found on some of 'those' used car lots.  My wife was telling me I was being too picky.  Sorry dear, but I don't want to own a piece of crap.  I found this one on the lot at Hunt Club Nissan.  I went over our budget by a little bit to get a clean one.  But in the end I got something that I'm thoroughly happy with and am excited about owning.

After I signed the deal on Friday, I started shopping for snow tires.  I had a deal pretty much dropped into my lap on Monday for a used set that I couldn't pass up.  When I say used, I mean they were bolted on the car and that's about it.  The guy bought them last year, they saw almost no use, then the lease was up on the car.  They're Hankook iPike RC01's, 205/55r16 on steelies, he only wanted $400 for the set.  Couldn't pass that up.

And since..... :ttiwwp:

Congrats!! Looks like you found one in great shape. Do you plan on getting Krown applied to it?

Sweet car.  Good call getting the '07.  Those little changes make for a big difference.

I can only imaging how much pep the 3 has.  I find the 2.3 to be reasonably spirited in the 5 and it's hauling around a lot more weight.  It's also very smooth.

Let us know what you think as time goes on.

Congrats
As a fellow owner the best advice I can provide is to keep the rust in check. Other than that happy motoring!

Well so far so good.  Not that there's anything wrong with our Forester, but I'm enjoying driving a car again.  Peppier, sharper turn-in, nice shifter.

The 2.3 is a very nice engine in the 3.  I'm finding very smooth and quiet.  Below 4k rpm it doesn't feel that different from the 2.0 in the base 3 sedan.  Above 4k rpm is where you can feel the difference between the 2 engines.  It definitely has plenty of oomph.

I got to give it a nice bath and a coat of wax yesterday, and Rain-x'd all the windows.  I will be taking it in to get it Krown'd before the snow flies.  Any recommendations for Krown in Ottawa?

The only thing I'm not crazy about on the car is the Cooper "lease return special" tires on it.  They're cheap, the sidewall is pretty soft for a 55 series tire.  I'll look for some better rubber in the Spring.

Is that Burnaby just off Huntmar?
I could swear I've seen you washing your Forester a few times passing by. :)

EDIT:
BTW, congrats on the new set of wheels! Happy motoring!

Yup, that's us.  I had to look in the background of the pics to see if I caught the street sign in there.  Nope.  So you must live in the area as well to know it that well?

Yes, I used to live at 575 Rosehill on the other side of Huntmar backing onto the ravine (the only Sandfield in that row) but we moved last April to Kanata Lakes. I have a close friend living on Burnaby a few houses down from you so I pass by your house quite often ;D
I used to walk by your house every time with my daughter to get to the children's park nearby.
That bus stop seen on the second photo was the last bit that gave it away :) (I spend many an hour waiting for the 261 there to take me downtown)

Ahhh...you got the better built phase 1 houses.  Small world....

Which house on Burnaby is your friends?  Ok, which car is there's, that I'll know for sure.

Next time I'm outside, stop and show off the new BMW...

Hey congrats too!  And your wife was wrong (I know, that doesn't happen very often, at least not at my house) - you weren't being too picky.  You got what you wanted and you're happy with it.  Can't argue that, and if you're happy, she's happy...no...wait... ::)
Yeah, once she saw it and drove it she agreed that I made the right call.

It's amazing how quickly you can become attached to something.
Her:  I'm taking the Mazda to work tonight
Me:  (on the outside) Sure
Me:  (on the inside) Are you sure you don't want to take the Forester?

Sandfield with 2 black cars (Rav4 and Cavalier). Now you know :)
We are going to their house this coming Saturday for a surprise baby shower for my wife. There will be lots of cars parked round the corner that day :)
