Infiniti M35 RIP
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:52:46 pm »
My wife and I were driving home from the Detroit airport on the I94 freeway Wednesday night in a rain storm when a taxi cab beside me hit standing water, fishtailed badly and wacked my rear bumper sideways hard and put me into a spin at about 90 kph.  The car spun quickly and rotated over 180 degrees and then crashed into the centre concrete wall at about 45 degrees.  Neither of us were hurt and we eventually got it to the outside shoulder to do a police report and wait for a flat bed.  The stress on our bodies was minimal because it was a rear collision.

Friends from Windsor came over to pick us up and we were sitting in their car about 50 feet ahead of ours in their Hyundai Santa Fe when a pick up truck hit the same puddle, spun and hit us with his F150 at about 90 kph.  I saw and heard him coming and had time to say "oh Sh*t" and experienced a violent collision that spun us around and set off all the airbags.  Your first thought is that the car is on fire because of the airbag smoke and smell.

Anyway, everybody seems to be ok (or close to it), but both cars look like they will be written off.  My Infiniti (2007 - 175,000 km) is worth $17-20k and has about $15k in damage.

What are the odds of being in two accidents with both cars written off within 90 minutes?

Gad you're OK. Good reminder for people who've had an accident to get far away from the area - especially when ice, water, etc was the cause.

Damn, as if you didn't have enough trauma from the first accident.  Thankfully everyone is OK.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Wow. Talk about your bad luck days.  :o

Hope you buy your friends a nice bottle of wine for their trouble (even though it's obviously not your fault).

That's insane. Another accident when you haven't even left the scene of the first!

Sounds like everyone had their seatbelts on when in the Santa Fe, but perhaps only by chance?

I wonder if standing water is an issue in that particular place every time it rains, and if something is going to be done for that stretch of road to improve it?

Too bad for the vehicles, but glad you're okay.

I've always heard the saying "bad things come in threes"   Be a little careful the next few days!  ;)

Seriously, I'm glad to hear everyone was OK....cars can be easily replaced.

It is a good reminder of how vunerable you are when stopped on the side of the road.

Hope you have smooth dealings with your insurance co.

Thanks for all the kind comments.

I have pretty well recovered from the crashes, but my wife's knee is still acting up and has to see the doctor again, but all in all we were very lucky.

I want to warn everybody that the maintenance of roads is being compromised because of budget cuts in many cities.  The puddle that caused our problems was deep enough to be 1.5 lanes wide and probably 4-6 inches deep along the barrier wall.  It wasn't raining hard at the time so it was caused by not keeping the catch basin or the storm sewer cleaned.  These things need to be cleaned out every 3-5 years.  It is a simple thing for some budget director to stretch the intervals to reduce costs.  SO - be very careful driving in the rain in American cities especially at night.  It doesn't matter if you have really good tires if you hit 5 inches of water at 90 kph - you will hydroplane and you might very well lose control.

I am still waiting for RBC to make a determination on my car, but I don't want it back after this.  The body shop says that they will have to graft the entire back end of a donor car to repair it, and I am frankly not interested.  The clip costs $5,000 plus shipping from New York state. I heard from somebody that RBC will repair for up to 70% of value and that some other companies use 50%.  I will have no problem going to my lawyer if they become difficult because I don't owe anything on the car and can buy another one without needing their check immediately.  I would like to hear from anybody who has experience with this issue.

I called RBC the morning after the accident to report it and was on hold for 5 minutes and got an overflow call centre.  I gave them all the details, but they couldn't tell me my policy details regarding rental cars.  I called around Windsor, but found the supply of rental cars to be very tight.  I took a Cadillac SRV which costs $95 per day.  It is a very well put together car with very high quality materials and drives quite well for an CUV.  My complaints are the rear visibility is very poor and that it is underpowered with it's 3L engine.  It handles much better than a Ford Edge in my opinion. I exchanged it for something smaller as my policy limits are $50 per day to a maximum of $1,500 and it is going to be a while before this is all resolved.

Stay tuned.

The body shop says that they will have to graft the entire back end of a donor car to repair it, and I am frankly not interested.

DO NOT do this. The chances of them getting that large of a repair exaclty correct are next to nil. The value of your vehicle following that major of a repair will also be next to nil. We aren't talking a simple quarter replacement or pulling out few dents. OK so I'll be devil's advocate. $5k for the rear clip. 3 days of cutting and welding (24 hours) to get it on. Prep and paintwork, rear lights, bumper cover, and you're easily at $10k before we talk mechanical like the gas tank, rear suspension, exhaust, electrical or if the car is still 100% straight and true.

Bottom line - pressure them for the payout. You don't want this one back.
Richard - that's my opinion and I stand by it.
