03 Civic LX Oil Consumption woes
« on: October 25, 2011, 05:56:46 pm »
Haven't got this checked out yet.

The wife's 2003 civic has ~125000km and lately between this and the last oil change went completely dry on oil.  Thanks to the oil light indicator briefly appearing when I was driving the car which is already too late.  It's been about 5000km since last oil change (8k intervals).  So I filled it up with 3.3L (capacity) of oil and checked it after 1.1k, had to fill up about .6L of oil.

So any suggestions?  PCV valve?  Rebuild?

Oh and there is an airbag light.....but that's another discussion.

Airbag light may be covered under 8 year warranty.  Call Honda asap.  Entire system is turned off including seat belt pre-tensioners.

As for oil.  Ya not great.  Could try PVC if so equipped.  Just keep adding.

Our Honda (and my Echo) were burning oil because they had a bazillion KMs on them.  I did a couple of Auto-RX treatments.  Oil burning stopped completely. Also, I removed the valve comver from the Echo and the internals were very very clean afterwards.  This stuff works as advertised.

No sign of obvious oil leak around the engine or on the ground?

Honda-tech.com has instructions on how to diag the air bag light problem or reset it.  Seems to be a problem in my Civic.  It was repaired under warranty.   Now that warranty has expired, the light came back.   :(

No oil in the garage, not one drop. Read up on the airbag light as well. Airbag light seems to be a common issue, when I get a chance I will try to reset the light and see if it comes back. I'll let you know how that goes. The car was bought late dec 2002 so no luck with warranty.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The oil is being burned then.  Maybe getting through the valve guide seal or possibly a ring sticking just enough.  It could be anything...but the oil is getting through and being burned.

Call Honda Canada regardless.  Say you are going to log a complaint to Transport Canada if they blow you off right away.  You never know their policy on this particular model when they know there are problems.

I would not sweet this oil thing.  just keep adding and don't bother with oil changes other than the filter.  It's a minor inconvenience, but not worth throwing money at.  From May 1st to October 31, I'd run 20W50.  Winter, you're stuck with 10W30.
