Horrific MotoGP Crash--Race Canceled
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:48:23 am »
This is two weeks in a row I have been watching a race live and witnessed a horrific accident.  About 10 minutes ago in today's race at Sepang, Marco Simocelli low-sided.  He slid across the track into oncoming bikes of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.  Edwards appeared to hit him in the mid back, and Rossi struck him in the head, which caused Simocelli's helmet to come flying off.  He lay motionless on the track with no helmet.  Rossi got away with no injuries, and Colin Edwards hit the ground after the crash and word is his shoulder is separated or dislocated. The race was immediately red flagged, then a few minutes later, canceled.

Still no word on Simocelli's condition.

Marco Simocelli just succumbed to the injuries he sustained on the 2nd lap of the MotoGP race.  He was 24.  He was a great young talent (finished 2nd in the last race), fun character and fan favorite.

RIP Marco. You were one of my son's favourites and will be missed.

Very sad news on this Sunday morning. Marco was always entertaining to watch in a race. Yes, he will be missed.

RIP, Marco.

Is it just me? It looks like Marco may be knocked out before Edwards hits him?....Marco's helmut is facing downwards and towards the rear. The Youtube videos that I have seen don't go back far enough (before Marco is off the bike).

Earlier in the corner, he low sides and is about to slide off the track.  But inexplicably, the front tire regained traction which righted the bike and made him veer into the path of the oncoming bikes.

You may be right, I'm reading other reports that he had somehow passed out before the crash. There will be an autopsy.
