Car for dad
« on: October 21, 2011, 07:30:55 pm »
Just got a phone call from dad, his car was in a minor accident at Deerfoot in Calgary. The car is a 2002 Infiniti i35 Sport. Even the accident is just a low speed rear-ender, with his car ran into an SUV in front. Hood, HID  headlights were damaged, also a lot of fluid drained. Chanaces are, it will be a write-off.

Found this ad for a Lexus ES350 in Calgary, one owner, 120,000Km. $17,995 FIRM. Owner said full service record at Lexus dealership. Dad is 78 this year, and I wanted to buy him a new Lexus in 2 years for his 80th Birthday. Cash is tie up in other investments right now, so a used car will have to do till then.

I am going into Calgary on Sunday to take a look at it. Any and all inputs / advices are greatly appreciated.

Looks like it's in great shape. For an older gentleman I think it's a excellent choice... comfortable, luxurious, reliable.

One would imagine that an ES would still be tight as a drum despite the mileage.

an es330 might be a safer bet with the 3.3L engine vs the 3.5L that has caused some problems:

http://sites.google.com/site/toyotav6oillinescandal/

my sienna has the 3.3L and it has plenty of power.  it does have a timing belt that needs replaced every 6 years.

or you could really suprise him with a fiat500...it comes with a jlo!

happy shopping!

My grandfather (in his 80s) drives a Lexus ES. So you seem to be shopping for the right car.

120k is just getting started for a Lexus, so it seems like a good buy. How much was this car new? The price strikes me as high for a car with that many kilometres, but I don't know much about the value of a used ES in Calgary...

For someone who isn't putting on 15,000km a year this Lexus is probably perfect.  It may need maintenance but there shouldn't be any surprises.

How did the i35 drive?  Does he want something sportier?

Saying he purchased the car in late 2006 or early 2007, he's driven around 25,000 km a year.  Which is maybe a little higher than most but not bad.

Wonder if the major maintenance items have been done at around that mileage?  Not sure what those are, I'd probably ask a Toyota dealer if I didn't know.

Looks well maintained though, which is always a plus.

The MSRP for the 2007 is $42,900, plus $3,600 for the Premium Package. I am more concern with the condition of the vehicle and service history.

The asking price is acceptable, if everything is what the ad says. 120K is not  lot on a Lexus, the miles could be mostly highway. Spoke to the seller yesterday, he is 100% FIRM on the price, and I setup an appointment on Sunday to test drive the car.

If I wanted a FWD luxury car, I'd be looking at that Lexus ASAP.  120K is nothing on those cars, and for the money, that is a lot of car.  The 3.5L is solid except for the oil supply tube problem, but most engines have been updated now.
No place I'd rather be...

If the Lexus didn't work out I second the vote for the Avalon. Very nice solid car for the money.

Did look at the car, the car itself is OK. ... HOWEVER ... this is not a private seller, but a small dealer, who bought the car, and is selling it without charging GST.

I was shown the CarProof History, it had a claim of $2100 in accident, filed in by a Lexus Dealer. Also shown a letter from a Bank, First Calgary Financial, stating no lien against the car. I am guessing a lease buy out loan or something like that.

The biggest BUT is dad no likes BLACK cars, so it is a NO GO on this one.

AKA a curber. Selling without charging GST is illegal. That usually isn't the only legality these guys ignore.
